Though billed as Facebook’s developer conference, f8 is not your run-of-the-mill hacker meetup, especially not in 2011. Prior to the event, the company had been meeting with entertainment and media companies, to build partnerships that take advantage of the company’s social networking skills. At the 2011 event, Facebook announced Timelines (a new, chronological way to organize content), the Ticker (a quick stream of short updates), and partnerships with Spotify and Netflix.
