New* Web Series Stars Sarah Silverman, David Cross, Isla Fisher

From the kind-of-makes-you-wonder-why-this-doesn’t-happen-more-often department:

A critically acclaimed mockumentary TV show from 2004 that died along with the cable network (Trio) it aired on is set to be re-released as a web series by My Damn Channel. Pilot Season stars Sarah Silverman, Sam Seder, Isla Fisher, David Cross, and Andy Dick — actors whose stocks have mostly risen since then.

Though last week’s Streamy Awards showed online video has star power, this is not the kind of cast any of today’s web series could command. The show debuts on April 20 with new episodes (30 total) rolling out every Monday (see the trailer and clips here). Here’s the trailer and premise:

Seder and Silverman play Max and Susan, former sweethearts who made a film together and broke up after it didn’t sell. But reflecting the series’ too-close-for-comfort authenticity, Seder and Silverman dated in real life and made the 1997 film “Who’s the Caboose?” — then broke up, in part because it didn’t sell.

We know that a web series can be oh-so-much more than just a TV series, but hey, there are a lot of great TV series that don’t get seen. Here’s hoping more people will clear up rights issues to bring them online.

Primetime Emmys Notice the Internet

Buried in yesterday’s Primetime Emmy nominations was the growing acknowledgment by oldteevee that maybe, just maybe, this TV-on-the-Internet thing’s here to stay. Using the categorization “Special Class Program” (which lumps online video in with live opera broadcasts and awards shows), the shorts lucky enough to be recognized by the Academy are studio-produced tie-ins with network or cable series; still, it’s some sort of progress. Here are the web-relevant categories — and the nominees:

Jimmy Kimmel Live also had a good night thanks to I’m F—ing Matt Damon/I’m F—ing Ben Affleck, which were nominated for Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics (just Matt Damon) and Outstanding Picture Editing Of Clip Packages For Talk, Performance, Award Or Reality Competition Programs (Single or Multi-Camera) (both shorts).

And there’s also a jury prize being awarded for Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media; the finalists are:

NTV Station Today: Feist Hits Sesame Street, Silverman and Kimmel Hit the Bricks

I was a big fan of Feist’s music before the iPod commercial lodged 1 2 3 4 inside our heads, and now she’s improved upon it — by adding Muppets. This Sesame Street appearance is an almost flawless recreation of the original video, but with simpler lyrics for the under-four set, and penguins. In a word: awesome.

Also, Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel officially announced the end of their relationship, which makes this a perfect opportunity to reflect on their two big viral hits from earlier this year. Who did the former couple used to f***? Remember the good times at NewTeeVee Station!
