ASmallWorld launches mobile app for invite-only social network

ASmallWorld, the invitation-only social network founded in 2004, launched an iPhone app Monday that will allow its online membership of about 715,000 people connect and share travel tips on the iPhone.

The app’s target audience is an exclusive bunch of folks, the kind who want travel tips and ask questions of each other, from “which yacht to purchase to where the best restaurants are.” Membership in ASmallWorld is by invitation only from a current member. The app’s intended purchase is to help members manage their personal and business lives with help from other members.

PaidContent covered the group in 2008, noting that it counted Paris Hilton and Naomi Campbell as members at the time and hoped to grow to 1 million members within three years. It currently has about 715,000 members.

The app will allow members Foursquare-esque services such as “meet-up” and “check-in” tools, which CEO Sabine Heller noted in the press release would prove useful as members travel to London for the Olympics this summer and want to connect with each other.

Super-lattice Could Yield Super Fuel Cells: Researchers at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Spain’s Universidad Complutense de Madrid and Universidad Politécnica de Madrid say they have developed a “super-lattice” that can allow solid-oxide fuel cells to operate at much lower temperatures and lower costs than existing fuel cells – ScienceDaily.

I’m stunned to be asking myself this question, but here goes: “Do I have to like Paris Hilton now?” The “celebutard” is an easy punching bag, but she has, on occasion, exhibited a certain degree of self-awareness — and in this Funny or Die exclusive, she’s definitely aware that there’s an election in full swing:

Riffing off Sen. John McCain’s not very accurate comparison between Barack Obama and celebrities such as herself, Hilton sounds off on McCain’s age and energy plans, and is actually very funny. Of course, Hilton isn’t the creative force behind this video — it’s a collaboration between Landlord creator Adam McKay and Chris Henchy, and is directed by Jake Szymanski. David Sarno of the LA Times spoke with McKay, who said he latched onto the idea of Hilton creating a response ad and was able to get her on board the project within hours. “McCain made one huge mistake: He drifted into the world of pop culture. And that’s Paris’ world,” McKay said.

Funny or Die isn’t the only one taking aim at McCain — Barely Political took a different approach with their humble suggestion of Britney Spears as a potential running mate:

I’ve praised McCain for finally taking online video seriously, but when it comes to invoking famous blondes, McCain is an amateur.

Installing Vista on a Fujitsu P1610

No, I haven’t tried installing Vista on Miyagi, my Fujitsu P1610, because it’s just too darn functional for me with Windows XP 2005 Tablet Edition running on it. I was pretty sure there would be a number of drivers that haven’t been released for Vista yet and I would have an incomplete setup. Don’t get me wrong, that 80 GB hard drive is just screaming out for a Vista partition and I’m sure I’ll have a go at it before too long, but meanwhile I have been following the Vista adventures of Jimmy Leung on his blog. Jimmy has been blogging about what works and doesn’t on the P1610, and he’s recently posted his reasons for returning to Windows XP. Surprisingly the brick wall Jimmy ran into with Vista is not even P1610 specific, although it’s a big problem, at least for Jimmy and me. BTW, Jimmy points out that the BIOS update that appeared on the Fujitsu support site recently is an older version than the one he’s already running.
