The growing sales of Internet connected televisions and DVD players has helped bolster the demand for online video content. One would think that it would be new content, but that's not the case. People want to watch movies and other broadcast fare, a study shows.

“Online content is mostly viewed on computers or mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones, but TVs are increasingly becoming devices of choice for consumers, particularly since an increasing numbers of sets have either built-in connectivity or can be connected to the internet via a peripheral device such as a connected Blu-ray player or set top box, among others,” noted Riddhi Patel, NPD DisplaySearch Research Director of Consumer Insights, “In fact, 25% of consumers surveyed said they view online content on their TV several times a week.”

A new study from NPD DisplaySearch says that 18 percent of consumers surveyed in 14 regions (see graphic below) are accessing online content daily on their TV sets. It shouldn’t come as a surprise since the sales of connected televisions that are enabled to access the Internet via WiFi or ethernet have been on an upswing.

What are people watching on their connected TVs? Most of the stuff they used to watch via DVDs, cable television and broadcast television. The Connected TV Study shows that movies are top picks as Internet content on TVs as well as older broadcast shows.

Despite this, daily usage of TVs to view online content remains under 30% in most countries. In fact, online content on TV is viewed most aggressively in China—possibly due to consumer interest in viewing foreign programs that may not be available via traditional TV medium.

While growth of flat-screen TV sales seems to have plateaued in mature markets like the U.S. and UK, research NPD DisplaySearch finds that there are still plenty of cathode ray-tube TV sets to be replaced in countries like China, Russia, Brazil and Mexico

Consumers in the U.S. and UK may have started slowing down the process of replacing their old CRT televisions with fancy new flat-screens. But happily for TV manufacturers, there are still plenty of bulky cathode ray-tube sets to be replaced in emerging markets like China, Russia, Brazil and Mexico.

In March, research company IHS iSuppli released projections showing that U.S. shipments of flat-screen TVs would decline by 5 percent this year to around 37 milion — the first recession since newer TV technologies like plasma began to emerge in the late 1990s.

Also read: Is the flat-screen TV boom over?

But while the U.S. market may be, er, flattening out, another research group, NPD DisplaySearch, says there’s still plenty of growth potential overseas.

Analyzing 14 markets worldwide, NPD found that, on a global basis over the last 12 months, the average age of TV’s being replaced decreased to 6.9 years from 8.4 years (see chart). This suggests that in emerging regions like rural China, consumers are shuttling out TV’s based on the older CRT technology, even though their sets are only a couple of years old.

“The good news is that a large number of markets still have a long way to go toward replacing all CRTs with flat panel TVs, which should continue to sustain growth, but mostly in emerging markets,” wrote Riddhi Patel, NPD DisplaySearch research director and author of the company’s Global TV Replacement Study.
