Not even the San Francisco fire department can stop us: NewTeeVee Live 2010 started off with a mandatory building evacuation, but ended up to be a fast-paced event highlighting Hulu's success, Google TV's vision, the challenges of designing TV-compatible interfaces and the power of conversations.

Wow, what a day. Yesterday marked GigaOM’s fourth annual version NewTeeVee Live conference, but it was the first time that the three of us were tasked with assembling the talent and putting together the list of speakers. After months of preparation, we finally got to see how things turned out. And, if we don’t say so ourselves, it ended up being pretty amazing, thanks in part to a smart and awesome audience that kept its cool even during a mandatory fire evacuation at the beginning of the show.

If you missed NewTeeVee Live 2010, you can watch the archived stream of the event here (thanks, Livestream!), or you can read a few of our thoughts on the hot topics of the day (okay, we promise, no more fire alarm puns) below.

Fireside chats are still awesome

We had a few panels yesterday and our keynote presenter, Jason Kilar, wanted to show a few slides before sitting down and chatting with Om. But for the most part, NewTeeVee Live 2010 was filled to the brim with interesting fireside chats with industry executives. We still think that having one-on-one discussions with thought leaders is the best way to extract deeper insight and deliver real, breaking news at an industry event.

Hulu has grown really big, really fast

For the first time, Hulu CEO Jason Kilar shared some real numbers in front of a live audience, announcing that his company will pull in more than $240 million in revenue in 2010, up from $108 million last year. Kilar added that Hulu had 30 million users in October 2010, who watched some 260 million content streams and 800 million ad units during that month. In other words, it’s clear that the online video site has come a long way since Om predicted its imminent demise, way back in 2008.

The volume of video YouTube users submit continues to grow

Google Director of Product Management Hunter Walk announced that YouTube users now upload 35 hours of video every minute, which is a huge number and about 50 percent higher than its previous announcement of 24 hours a minute. The online video service is also now available on “hundreds of millions” of connected devices, according to Walk.

Adobe is working to cure its Flash power management problems

Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch said the company is working to improve on reported “battery drain” issues around Flash when rich media plays on a page. That’s part of the company’s revamped strategy for the plugin, which is focused around mobile devices. Lynch also was more conciliatory toward HTML5 than in the past, but said Flash still had the advantage in many areas, including content security and codec support.

‘Normal people’ don’t want widgets on their TV screens or keyboards as remotes

Adaptive Path president Peter Merholz threw some cold water on consumer electronics manufacturers who are trying to add new features to users’ TV screens and input devices. Through research conducted by interviewing “normal people,” Adaptive Path found that the most effective user experience designs include “minimum input for maximum output.” A good example is Pandora, which provides users with a stream of music based on entering one song, or artist.

TV is now a two-way conversation

Multiple sessions about the rise of social viewing all pointed to the same conclusion: that programmers increasingly need to think about how social tools can be used to engage with the audience. Tim Kring, executive producer of Heroes, and Carlton Cuse, one of the creators of Lost, talked about how their shows engaged with their respective audiences through alternate reality games and by launching at events like Comic-Con. Twitter staffer Robin Sloan discussed how synchronous tweeting during live TV shows makes up a larger portion of the traffic on the social network. And Hardie Tankersley, VP of Innovation at Fox Broadcasting Company, said the celebrity tweet is crucial to extending the brand.

Google TV is struggling to win support from broadcasters

Google TV product lead Rishi Chandra continues to push the concept of bringing all the best web content to the TV, but is having a hard time getting broadcasters on board with the idea of allowing their online video content to be shown on Google TV devices. Yesterday Fox.com became the latest broadcaster site to block access to Google TV, following ABC, CBS and Fox. While Google executives are saying all the right things, they clearly are having a hard time selling content owners on the value of bringing their videos onto the Google TV platform.

Cord cutting makes for a good drinking game

GigaOm TV producer and NewTeeVee Live MC Chris Albrecht suggested that folks following us on the live stream should take a shot every time anyone on stage used the phrase “cord cutters.” We hope you guys give your liver a good rest over the coming weeks, because we lost count at over thirty instances. All jokes aside, with Google’s Chandra saying that it isn’t happening, but Merholz and many others outing themselves as cord cutters. Cord cutting was one of the hot topics on as well as off stage.

Although television has become more fragmented thanks to the web, millions of people still tune in for certain shows, including the Emmys and the MTV Video Music Awards. The real-time conversation that Twitter allows makes it a perfect companion for those events, staffer Robin Sloan — who works on the social network’s media-partnership team — told attendees at GigaOM’s NewTeeVee Live conference this morning. Sloan said that the network gets 90-million-plus tweets every day, and “a lot of those tweets are about TV shows.”

As an example, he showed a graph of tweets about the show Dancing With the Stars. Huge peaks in traffic coincided exactly with new shows, meaning people were tweeting about the show as it was happening. The Twitter media evangelist talked about three things that using Twitter can do to make such events more powerful, including:

Synchronous show tweeting: in which channels such as Discovery get a scientist or some other knowledgeable person to tweet along with a show about a specific topic, to add information. This is “simple, but can be very powerful,” Sloan said.

Social viewing: Taking advantage of the fact that viewers are tweeting about the show is “the new campfire,” said Sloan — a way of showing people that they are not alone. True Blood has a whole website that just aggregates tweets about the show, so that viewers don’t have to remember hashtags, etc.

New kinds of content: During the MTV Video Music Awards show, Sloan said the network tracked all the tweets in real time and had a “Twitter jockey” on screen who watched them and picked out examples. The show also had a 95-foot-wide monitor showing the number of tweets and votes for specific stars.

This kind of “conversational choreography” is becoming a crucial part of any major TV event, Sloan said — just as important as focusing the stage lights or charging up the microphones — and can become a new way of reimagining content thanks to the “incredibly powerful force” that is the real-time conversation about that content.

Next Wednesday, executives from Hulu, Adobe, YouTube, Google TV, Fox and others will talk about how the next wave of video innovation at NewTeeVee Live. Please join us for a day of discussion on how new technologies will disrupt today's current video distribution and monetization models.

At next week’s NewTeeVee Live conference, we’re looking at an industry that has rapidly matured. But it is still getting used to its new role, recovering from growing pains, and preparing for the future.

Four years ago, it was clear as a day to me that, much like rest of the media industry, the world of video was going to atomized, thanks to digitization. As a broadband prognosticator, it was even more evident that video would become one of the killer apps of broadband.

So we created NewTeeVee to track the changes in the video landscape. In the past several years, we’ve seen YouTube grow from a place where people posted personal videos to a video powerhouse with nearly $1 billion in (estimated) revenues. Hulu, which wasn’t even around back then, has become the place to watch TV shows online.

Video on the web has come a long way since we founded NewTeeVee. It’s no longer just about watching some low-quality, short clips in a small, slow-to-load video player. Today, more and more viewers are turning to a stable of brand-new gadgets to watch video not just on their laptops, but on their TVs and other devices.

We now have companies like Netflix and Amazon delivering movies and TV shows in HD directly to TV sets and to mobile phones and tablets so you can watch your favorite content wherever you are. I watched the recently concluded Major League Baseball season entirely online — on my laptop, my iPad and on the new Mac Mini connected to my big screen television, which is equipped with Boxee software. In fact, these connected devices are becoming all the rage these days. The newly introduced AppleTV is flying off the shelves, even to the surprise of Apple itself.

In 2007, we hosted our first NewTeeVee Live conference. We are going to host the fourth edition of this industry event a week from today and we hope to learn about the future of video distribution, thanks to conversations with video industry leaders. In the four years that have passed, we’ve seen massive changes in how video is made, distributed and viewed by consumers. But there’s still a lot more change to come.

At NewTeeVee Live next week, our keynote speaker, Hulu CEO Jason Kilar, will be with us to discuss the challenges and the opportunities that confront his company and others that seek to provide premium, long-form content online. I’ll be talking to him about new business models that are emerging — like Hulu’s move to offer a subscription service — and the challenges the company faces in making content available on a wide variety of devices.

Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch will discuss how Flash will remain relevant in a world where Apple’s iPad and HTML5 are quickly gaining adoption. And YouTube’s Hunter Walk will talk to us about what’s next for the No. 1 video site on the web. (Check the schedule for details of keynotes and panels.)

Devices are becoming increasingly important, as viewers are now able to access their favorite online video services in the living room. Google TV product lead Rishi Chandra and Samsung director of content Olivier Manuel will show attendees how consumer electronics companies are working to bridge the divide between online video and the TV.

Social media and multi-platform distribution are also key forces that content producers must be aware of. As a result, Fox Broadcasting’s Hardie Tankersley and Ensemble Pictures’ Oren Jacobs will discuss how social media is becoming increasingly important in capturing viewers interest and attention — whether you’re pitching a hit TV show like Glee or you’re building an audience for independent film distribution. And Bryan Perez, general manager for NBA Digital, will talk about how a three-screen strategy has been key to the basketball league. (Here is a full list of speakers.)

All these speakers and more will be present to push forward the conversation about the next wave of video innovation, and how the next generation of video technologies will be disruptive to the business models of TV and movie distribution already in place. How the industry will shake out is unclear, but our speakers will help shed some light on how this industry is rapidly evolving.

The amazing part of this year’s event is that we have a brand new team at the helm of NewTeeVee — Ryan Lawler, Janko Roettgers and Liz Shannon Miller — and they’re bringing a unique new energy to our conference. They will be shepherding most of the conversations, but you’ll see me pop up often enough.

We hope to see you there. And if you haven’t reserved your spot, I would urge you to do so. Tickets are going fast.

We're thrilled to announce Hulu CEO Jason Kilar as keynote speaker at this year's NewTeeVee Live, where he will lead our discussion on the future of online video and the business models that will enable it to thrive.

Since being founded just three years ago, Hulu has quickly established itself as the go-to spot for broadcast video content on the web. The company took in more than $100 million in revenue last year and should double that this year, based on its ability to monetize video better than anyone else on the web and the recent introduction of its subscription service, Hulu Plus.

Not just that, but Hulu Plus is quickly becoming a true multi-platform player, with the service becoming available on the Sony PlayStation3, Microsoft Xbox 360, iPhone, iPad, TVs and Blu-ray players from Samsung, Sony and Vizio, as well as TiVo DVRs and Roku set-top boxes.

With all that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Hulu CEO Jason Kilar will be discussing all of this and more at this year’s NewTeeVee Live, Nov. 10 in San Francisco. Kilar first spoke at NewTeeVee Live back in 2008, but as this year’s keynote speaker, he’ll lead our discussion on the future of online video and the business models that will enable it to thrive.

He isn’t the only heavy-hitter in these year’s program. Other confirmed speakers include:

Kevin Lynch, CTO of Adobe

Hunter Walk, Director of Product Management at YouTube

Rio Caraeff, President and CEO of Vevo

Oren Jacob, Executive Producer of Ready, Set, Bag!, Ensemble Pictures

Rishi Chandra, Senior Product Manager at Google TV

Olivier Manuel, Director of Content for Samsung Electronics America

Bryan Perez, SVP and GM of NBA Digital

Hardie Tankersley, VP of Innovation at Fox Broadcasting Company

Bram Cohen, Chief Scientist and Co-founder of BitTorrent

Topics of interest covered at NewTeeVee Live 2010 include:

Cutting the cord. With the rise of ubiquitous broadband and the availability of popular shows through online portals, cable “unsubscribers” are the new trend.

Touch TV. What impact will the iPad and similar devices have on viewing habits? Will new devices and audiences herald a new wave of content formats and innovation?

Google TV. Can Google succeed where Microsoft and others have failed? Will Google’s strengths in search and its YouTube service allow it to create a killer product proposition?

Multiplatform Storytelling. People are now watching shows on their TVs, netbooks, laptops, set-top boxes and tablets. How is this endpoint proliferation transforming both mainstream television and web-only content?

The buzz phrase “audience engagement” flies across conference tables in ad agencies, technology companies and broadcast networks, but truly engaging the audience has been the job of storytellers since the beginning of time.

The essence of good storytelling never changes: strong identifiable characters and a plot line that keeps your eyes glued to the screen. But thanks to evolving technology, the tools of storytelling are changing, and managing the audience is becoming just as important as entertaining them.

Join Primetime Emmy® winners Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Tim Kring (Heroes), two of televisions pioneering and most successful writer/producers in an open and frank discussion about the evolution of storytelling, moderated by cross media expert and Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Interactive Media Peer Group Executive Committee member, Brian Seth Hurst.

Today’s computer mouse has replaced yesterday’s TV remote, and the lap or the hand has become the TV stand. As the digital and technological barriers between televisions and computers blur, the picture for the digital video industry begins to come into focus.

NewTeeVee Live, produced by GigaOM, is the online video industry’s flagship event with a strong heritage, top-tier speakers and unparalleled atmosphere.

Topics include:

Cutting the cord. With the rise of ubiquitous broadband, viewers are now watching popular shows online.

Streaming HD. It’s great for the viewer, but hard on the network. Which technologies will lighten the load?

Touch TV. What impact will the iPad and similar devices have on TV? Will they herald a new wave of content formats, audience, innovation and commerce?

Google TV. Why might the partnership between Google and YouTube succeed where others have failed?

Multiplatform Storytelling. People are now watching shows on every device. How is this endpoint proliferation transforming both mainstream television and web-only content?

3-D in the home. Will the success of Avatar translate to the small screen?

For more information on the conference, speakers and topics, see details here.

What’s the next big thing in online video? Are consumers ready to cut the cord? How will the growing proliferation of tablet and other mobile device influence video distribution? These are just some of the topics we will be discussing at NewTeeVee Live 2010, which will be held November 10 at the Mission Bay Conference Center in San Francisco.

Now in its fourth year, NewTeeVee Live is the premiere event covering the paradigm shift in video creation and distribution, from traditional TV and film formats to a growing number of online and mobile outlets. Past speakers have included Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, Hulu CEO Jason Kilar, former CBS Interactive President Quincy Smith, YouTube co-founder Steve Chen and Felicia Day, creator of The Guild. This year we have another great lineup, with representatives from Adobe, Vevo, Google TV, Samsung and Fox Broadcasting, among others.

Confirmed speakers for this year’s event include:

Kevin Lynch, CTO, Adobe

Hunter Walk, Director of Product Management, YouTube

Rio Caraeff, President and CEO, Vevo

Oren Jacob, Executive Producer, Ready, Set, Bag!, Ensemble Pictures

Rishi Chandra, Senior Product Manager, Google TV

Olivier Manuel, Director of Content, Samsung Electronics America

Bryan Perez, SVP and GM, NBA Digital

Hardie Tankersley, VP of Innovation, Fox Broadcasting Company

Bram Cohen, Chief Scientist and Co-founder, BitTorrent

Topics of interest covered at NewTeeVee Live 2010 include:

Cutting the cord – With the rise of ubiquitous broadband and the availability of popular shows through online portals, cable “unsubscribers” are the new trend.

Touch TV – What impact will the iPad and similar devices have on viewing habits? Will new devices and audiences herald a new wave of content formats and innovation?

Google TV – Can Google succeed where Microsoft and others have failed? Will Google’s strengths in search and its YouTube service allow it to create a killer product proposition?

Multiplatform Storytelling – People are now watching shows on their TVs, netbooks, laptops, set-top boxes and tablets. How is this endpoint proliferation transforming both mainstream television and web-only content?

Come join us November 10 at the Mission Bay Conference Center in San Francisco. Early Bird Tickets are available now for just $345 (with discount code NTV50) through September 11, or $445 with a GigaOM Pro subscription.
