Hulu today announced a $2 price cut on its for-pay subscription service, Hulu Plus, reducing the price to $7.99, hoping it will goose revenues further in 2011. In this video chat from NTV Live, CEO Jason Kilar talks about company's strategy, IPO and Hulu Plus.

Hulu, the Los Angeles-based online video service, today announced a $2 price cut on its for-pay subscription service, Hulu Plus, reducing the price to $7.99 per month. The service is hoping the premium version, which is showing up on devices such as the Boxee Box and the Roku player, will help the company keep its revenues growing at a breakneck speed.

In 2008, Hulu brought in $25 million. In 2009, the company had sales of $108 million. By the end of 2010, the company hopes to hit revenues of $240 million. In this video conversation, recorded at our NewTeeVee Live event, Kilar says he has good visibility into the next season and is confident about the future. Of course, that prompted a question about a possible initial public offering. Kilar dodged that question, and refused to comment.

When it comes to devices, I asked Kilar what the company’s strategy is around devices. He said he, “wants to be in every Internet connected device” but in order for that to happen, he wants to make sure that not only his customers, but also content owners, are happy with the arrangement.

Hulu Plus gets you to the living room via Internet-connected televisions and other such devices, he said. “We are ahead of plan on HuluPlus,” Kilar said. The number of subscriptions is ahead of where his team thought they would be, he added.

When I asked him why I have to watch ads when I pay for subscription for HuluPlus, Kilar pointed out that there is nothing preventing them from offering an ad-free HuluPlus, but the costs would be super-high. The end customers told Hulu to find a happy balance. I guess $7.99 is the magic number, and it’s the number that allows Hulu to compete with their long-term nemesis Netflix, which currently charges $8.99 a month for access to one DVD a month and online streaming.

Anyway, watch the video.

More and more of the video that we watch on the web is streamed live. In fact, Nielsen has found that the amount of live video watched online grew more than 600 percent over the past year. At GigaOM’s NewTeeVee Live conference Wednesday, executives from livestream providers UStream, LiveStream and Justin.tv, plus the head of YouTube’s new livestream product, gave their take on what’s driving that growth.

“The proliferation of connected cameras sets the stage for people to broadcast,” said John Ham, the CEO and co-founder of UStream, which has seen 549 percent year over year growth in terms of viewing time. “On the other side of that,” he added, “you have people watching, enabled by connected screens and broadband and things like that.”

Justin.tv chief executive Michael Seibel agreed that being able to capture video with mobile devices on the fly is key. Simply put, he said, “It’s hard to produce interesting content in front of your computer.” But at small high school games, business conferences and other events, “the content is out there,” commented Max Haot, CEO of LiveStream, “and all these viewers want to connect with these events.”

Ultimately, said Joshua Siegel, YouTube’s product lead for live streaming, YouTube would like to take live video content creation and streaming to the masses. But he said the company wants to start with content partners and events before scaling up to “address the full user segment.” The infrastructure takes time to build, he explained, and YouTube wants to “go out with an offering that’s great for broadcasters and users, while respecting the rights of copyright owners.” For a company of Google’s size, he said, “that’s a very serious technology issue.” But he closed on a bright note: Referring to live streaming, he said, “We think that there’s phenomenal potential and we’re definitely going to be investing in it in 2011.”

The celebrity tweet: good or bad? For the wildly popular television show Glee! it's been a great success, though Fox VP of Innovation Hardie Tankersley admits that companies need to tread carefully in the Twitterverse.

The celebrity tweet: good or bad? Discuss. According to Hardie Tankersley, VP of Innovation at Fox Broadcasting Company, the celebrity (or character) tweet is crucial to extending the brand, although sometimes it’s gotten the company into trouble.

One example of a successful Twitter campaign has been around the television show Glee! Tankersley said the characters all have their own Twitter feeds, which the writers populate and which “are damn funny.” The actors themselves have their own Twitter feeds, too, which can sometimes be even more popular than the character feeds, said Tankersley. Though, he admitted that letting a young staff tweet at will sometimes made the network nervous.

Celebrities have embraced Twitter over the past year with various success, from Demi Moore’s tweeted bikini shots to Lindsey Lohan’s personal ranting tweets. But with a little coordination, and a dose of a network that gets new media content, the coordinated celebrity tweet can go a long way to building a better brand.

What’s next for BitTorrent, a company that initially tried to establish a peer-to-peer-based download store for mainstream Hollywood, then aimed to help publishers distribute bits more effectively? BitTorrent co-founder and chief scientist Bram Cohen explained today at GigaOM’s NewTeeVee Live conference that the company hopes to help content creators reach its sprawling user base (80 million active users per month) and, within a matter of months, release its long-awaited P2P solution for live streaming.

BitTorrent is about sending around large, previously created files, said Cohen. “Live streaming is about watching content as quickly as possible after it’s created.” He said he’s “shooting for around 5 second latency from when the content goes out to when it’s actually displayed on people’s machines.

Asked by NewTeeVee’s Janko Roettger’s just whose problems BitTorrent is trying to solve with its live streaming product, Cohen noted that companies like UStream and Justin.tv “spend a lot of money on bandwidth,” and P2P could offer a more affordable alternative. “Even if you do have the money,” Cohen added, “it’s a real problem from an engineering standpoint to set up a real live solution. I have some very unorthodox techniques that I’ve come up with in order to take the latencies down.” Plus he said, from the perspective of system administrators, “It’s much easier to use my P2P solution than a hosted solution.”

Use cases for BitTorrent’s P2P live streaming solution, according to Cohen, include sports and news events, webinars, and programming that lets people “follow what celebrities are doing in close to real time. There’s also demand for a better solution to stream “sports-like events, like Quake tournaments,” he said, referring to the video game series.

At this point, said Cohen, the bulk of BitTorrent’s revenue comes from “direct consumer relationships, and a small proportion comes from licensing.” Going forward, he added, the company plans to “put a lot more emphasis” and “bring a lot more value to consumer electronics manufacturers.”

Update that old statistic — more than 35 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute, Google’s Director of Product Management Hunter Walk announced at NewTeeVee Live today. But the conversation focused on YouTube’s increasing multi-platform approach to content distribution, with a focus moving, in Walk’s words, “from a device-centric world to a user-centered world.”

Hundreds of the YouTube partners contributing to that 35 hours a minute of video are now making six-figure annual incomes, Walk said, and YouTube is working to create more lightweight editing tools for users (presumably along the lines of the current YouTube editor).

The glut of content now being loaded onto YouTube means that the YouTube team, according to Walk, is focused on the question of discover, in an effort to create “sessions” for users as opposed to the viewing of single streams.

To that end comes the launch of YouTube Topics, a machine-oriented tagging system for YouTube videos that take user data from videos as well as other meta-data to create a broader picture of related content, as well as allowing users to filter search results with specific options.

And the aim is to have the YouTube audience engaging with that content across their computers as well as other devices. Walk said that there are currently 150 million mobile playbacks, and that YouTube Leanback is helping them move onto the television — or any large screen.

“People talk about TV Everywhere, but I think of it as content everywhere,” Walk said. “People want to connect with content they care about, and they want it on every screen.”

The new media screen is about a single space, layered with the audience’s and brand’s content, said Dale Herigstad, Chief Creative Officer for Schematic at NewTeeVee Live 2010 on Wednesday. In contrast to the traditional TV and PC screen, which has various pages and screens for different media, the future of the next-generation screen looks a lot more like an iPhone app, says Herigstad.

Herigstad, who is the creative force at new media marketing company Schematic, focuses on three aspects in his daily work: layers, spaces, and channels. Sounds like jargon?

It is, partly, but Schematic has made interactive branding experiences for everyone from Google to Comcast to Coca-Cola to NBC. And don’t forget, Herigstad says, at the end of the day the audience feels like it owns the screen and the branding experience. Don’t ever forget that. Check out his comments below:

They want it to be simple, and it should “just work.” Those are some of the findings from research conducted through interviews with “normal people” by the user experience design firm Adaptive Path. Speaking today at GigaOM’s NewTeeVee Live conference, the firm’s president Peter Merholz explained, “People want the same media experience they’ve always had. Not everybody wants the latest whizzy, super complicated set of features and functions.”

Merholz called for minimal input and maximal output for consumers. “Pandora is an inspiration,” he said, “because of the ability to put in one thing and get this stream.” Another model to keep in mind? Old-school television sets. “When we were all kids, you turned on the TV and it just worked,” commented Merholz. “About the only hassle was moving the rabbit ears to get reception.”

Real simplicity occurs on at least two levels, according to Merholz: technical and experiential. “You can have something that’s simple, but has a lot of friction,” he said. Examples of technical friction include poor battery life and unreliable wireless connectivity, while experiential friction can involve finding stuff to watch, interstitial advertising or pay-per-item. If a service requires consumers to make a decision to buy “every time they want to watch an episode, I don’t think that’s a long-term winner,” he said. Later he commented that “Netflix has recognized the power of ‘frictionlessness,’” and “Cable isn’t going anywhere because it has the least friction of all these video experiences.”

The motivations for engaging with particular media at a particular time, meanwhile, are not simple. Predictable, perhaps, but more nuanced than black-and-white desires to be either informed or entertained. “People engage with media to change modes,” he said. They may want to be informed, kill time, be productive, focused, bond with others, or relaxed. “People have these predictable rhythms,” said Merholz, telling the NewTeeVee Live audience that “TV programmers are smarter than you. They understand that people want something different at different times of day.” With Netflix, TiVo, Apple TV and other services, he said, “all I have are lists.”

Televisions have been in American homes for decades but only in the last three years has Samsung rolled out broadband connected televisions. Olivier Manuel, director of content at Samsung Electronics America says his company has to straddle the line between early adopters and the wider audience that doesn’t think about accessing the web on their televisions. Speaking today at GigaOM’s NewTeeVee Live event in San Francisco, Manuel stressed that about half of the buyers of Samsung’s connected televisions or Blu-Ray players use the broadband capability, and the numbers increase when the connectivity is via Wi-Fi instead of a cable.

That’s just one example where simplicity helps. Another is the remote. He said that all apps can be accessed via the regular TV remote, which is familiar to consumers. For more advanced users, Samsung released an app for Android handsets and iPhones that allows for more granular control of apps on the television screen. What began as a simple ticker in 2008 streaming news and weather content via an RSS feed from USA Today, has now become a full-fledged app market with games, Facebook and web video apps that users love.

Manuel says that so far the killer apps on the television have been video like Netflix or Hulu Plus and sports content, but also Pandora. As for attracting developers to create the next killer app, the strategy is supporting web languages like Java and HTML5 so developers don’t have to spend much time adapting their apps for the television. Samsung also recently launched an app contest to prime the pump with winners showing off their apps at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. However Manuel acknowledged that today the same big players on the web and in pay TV are the same big players when it comes to apps on televisions, while noting that there are opportunities to create ticker-style apps for sharing a person’s social feeds without taking over the entire screen and other social TV applications. Just remember, keep it simple.

He said the two can co-exist and create a winning proposition for consumers.

The key, he said, will be a layer of management software in the cloud that will support any network, device, application or location. By tying this all together with access to social networks and advertising, both users and the various players involved can benefit. “It’s not a conflict between walled gardens and non-walled gardens, it’s which company can leverage the ecosystem to do interesting things for the consumer to make their lives better,” he said.

Though he didn’t cite it by name, Snow seems to be pointing to Motorola Medios, a software suite that is aimed at managing media across multiple screens and deploying new TV services. Snow cited Motorola research that found that consumers want a constant experience between devices and they demand connectivity with the community at all times. And people want companion services that can augment their viewing experience. He said companies can put it together will reap the rewards.
