I have always maintained that Kickstarter is not just a startup. It is instead an agent of change that portends a big economic shift. It is part of a shift away from industrial-era economics to a maker economy that is now possible because of the constant state of connectedness.

That is why I am particularly excited to announce that Perry Chen, the co-founder and CEO of Kickstarter is going to join me and Katie Fehrenbacher on stage for our second annual RoadMap conference, scheduled to be held on November 5 in San Francisco.

Chen, in an interview earlier this year, told me that society is reaching a new “bursting point of creativity.” We will explore this and many other aspects onstage. The theme of the conference is how design and user experience are going to help us navigate the connected planet.

Chen is the latest to join an already stellar line-up of speakers for our event. Other speakers we have announced include Steve Case (co-founder AOL and Revolution) Evan Williams (Blogger, Twitter & Obvious Corp.), David Karp (CEO of Tumblr), Kevin Systrom (CEO of Instagram), Tony Fadell (co-founder and CEO of Nest), Ben Silberman (CEO of Pinterest), Katia Beauchamp (CEO of Birchbox) and Jennifer Pahlka (founder and Executive Director of Code for America). For a full line-up of speakers, visit the Roadmap website, and you can buy your tickets for the event here.

“Cloud first” markets — those where companies’ first serious engagements with information technology are in the form of cloud computing — are beginning to emerge. For the BRIC economies in particular, this might mean a chance to adopt low-cost solutions that will give companies a clear competitive advantage over more established enterprises bogged down by legacy infrastructure. Many pieces are already in place, and so it is worth pondering where the real force behind our knowledge industries will wind up in the next few years.

The barriers to EV adoption are widely known but center around a few major issues, including range anxiety, charging time and initial cost. Range anxiety and unease about charging time will decline as consumers get more comfortable with the product. That leaves the real long-term issue: initial cost.

The Economist is bringing the traditional Oxford-style debate online and shining a light on energy, asking the question “Conservation or innovation?” The formal statement up for debate is this: “We can solve our energy problems with existing technologies today, without the need for breakthrough innovations.” I don’t think anyone would argue that we don’t need new innovations, but it’s important to consider how much of our efforts should go towards new R&D for clean power vs. implementing energy-efficiency standards that are already available.

The Economist asked me to submit an essay on my position, and I argued that while we need everything we can get to meet our greenhouse gas emissions goals, we need to invest a lot more than we have been into energy-efficiency programs.

Energy efficiency — often referred to as the low-hanging fruit of the power world — offers one of the cheapest and most valuable tools for remaking our energy landscape. But it is just one of the tools we need to meet very necessary, stringent carbon reduction goals.

Baseball’s All-Star Break this week proved to be quite special – not because this was the last All-Star game at The Yankee Stadium, the cathedral of baseball and a place where I fell in love with this distant cousin of cricket. No, it was not special because the All-Star game went into the wee-hours of the night and took 15 long innings before the American League took their rightful place in the winners’ circle. No, it was not special because Josh Hamilton put on an awesome display of power and sprayed home-runs during the HR derby.

To me it was special because it was all about young talent, many making their first (and not their last) trip to the All-Star Game. The HR Derby had none of the established hitters vying for the prize – instead it was all young turks. The All Star game was no different – packed with youth, energy and enthusiasm of talents like Justin Morneau, Scott Kazmir, Grady Sizemore and Evan Longoria. David Wright, Dan Haren, Dustin Pedroia, and Joe Mauer. This was a year where the guard changed.

The game is still the same, except there were new heroes and new starts. That is the beauty of the game I have come to love more dearly than life itself. I think that is the case with my other passion – blogging. Like baseball, the art of blogging remains the same, we just get new players. You see the changes on the Techmeme leaderboard, as new voices emerge, and take their rightful place center stage. We see an emergence of new class of bloggers who are on their way to getting our full attention, playing with some of us old timers (by blogging metrics at least.)

Some (not all) of them (in no particular order) are Eric Eldon at VentureBeat, Allen Stern, MG Siegler of ParisLemon, Caroline McCarthy at The Social, and Andrew Chen. Like Josh Hamilton, blogging also has have a reclamation project in Henry Blodget, leaving his past behind, and playing a new game.

They are among many others who I read daily, just like I read the folks on our team. The rise of 1990s Yankees dynasty came when they took home grown talent of youngsters like Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera and teamed them up veterans like Paul O’Neill. I feel the same way about our little team – I feel especially fortunate that the future of blogging is working alongside me in our little company – Katie Fehrenbacher, Craig Rubens, Chris Albrecht, Liz Gannes, Stacey Higginbotham, Judi Sohn and Mike Gunderloy.

The point I am trying to make is that blogging, like baseball, is a continuum of talent. Instead of hitting and pitching, blogging is about having something meaningful to say, informing, entertaining and educating your community. But most importantly it is about ability to converse, connect and prod your readers into thinking differently. I learnt that from Dave Winer & Doc Searls. I don’t see why those truisms should change – just like the sinker, the long ball and the stolen base.

With that said, like some of my favorite veterans on the All Star Steam, I am not ready to hang up my blogging cleats. Not anytime soon! Now back to regular baseball and of course, blogging.

PS: does anyone have a photo of the All_Star game they want to share with my readers? Email me the link or leave it in comments.

The company thinks that boots-on-the-ground in targeted cities can help convince customers. We’ll see. And if their obvious bid to bring in pissed-off phone and cable customers wasn’t clear enough, they commissioned this not-so-subtle chalk drawing outside.
This Win Mobile 5 phone is based on the GSM cellular network and supports 3G data types of GPRS, GTMS, and the new speedy HSDPA. (Can you say up to 1.8 Mbps?). You got your Bluetooth, you got your 802.11b & g, and you got your 2.1 MP camera. Did I just say 2.1 MPs? I guess I did. I’m a little surprised that i-mate went a little light on the CPU since it’s only 300 MHz, but they didn’t skimp on memory: you get 128 MB of ROM and 64 MB of RAM. Don’t forget that sneaky little keyboard that slides out, too. I’d expect that the screen to be full VGA, but no word on that or on the price.
