Besides overhauling the look and feel of iOS 7, some of the core iOS apps Apple offers on the iPhone got major updates. And some new features will seem strikingly familiar to some third-party app makers.

As part of a major redesign of iOS 7, Apple showed off some very drastic facelifts for core iPhone apps. A lot of those changes will also seem very familiar: from the new Mail app to Calendar to Weather, it’s pretty clear that Apple has learned well from its army of third-party app makers — and from its biggest competitors.

The basic productivity apps that Apple offers by default have a much more uniform look now: they use a lot of white space with very skinny black font. The overall effect is a far more clean and simplified; gone are the shadows and textures and multicolors. The control buttons have been updated as well in this same theme.

Apple updates these apps a little bit here and there with each new version of the iOS. But we’ve never seen as dramatic an overhaul of them as we saw today.

The new Calendar, for example, doesn’t just look a lot cleaner, it does more stuff too. And I was immediately struck by how Apple had incorporated some of the nicest features from my favorite iOS Calendar app, Sunrise. iOS Calendar now automatically incorporates Facebook Events right onto your calendar, and it also shows you the weather forecast for the day; both are really handy features Sunrise introduced with its iOS app earlier this year.

But that’s not all. Calendar now also features a neat feature seen previously in Donna and in Google Now: once an event is created and the location is inserted, Calendar will estimate how long it will take you to travel — by foot or car — to your next appointment. That travel time is then blocked out on your calendar so you don’t have any overlap. Like those two apps (and plenty others) Calendar will also auto-suggest locations when you’re inputting events.

Another basic app where Apple had been very badly lapped by the competition? Weather.

Apple had long neglected this one and it got to the point where even Yahoo was making a snappier and more elegant iOS weather app than Apple. And, oddly enough, Apple’s new app looks almost identical to what Yahoo brought to the App Store very recently, from the translucent background to the incredibly skinny font, to the layout of each element. The new Weather also has better animations, and supplies far more important detail than previously.

The new Camera app also caught up with every other photo app out there and added filters. It’s not likely this will dissuade many Instagram users from opening that app when they’re looking to turn their photos sepia or black and white. But it at least shows that Apple is watching what the trends are and understands the kind of (very) basic features it needs for its core iOS apps. And it’s clearly not afraid to borrow.

The outside inspiration didn’t really stop with filters either: Apple also finally has Flashlight as a default app, available in the new and very handy Control Center menu. That should come as not-so-great news to the nearly two dozen Flashlight apps currently on offer in the App Store.

Apple’s Mail also looks a lot cleaner and crisper; it actually looks like it belongs with the Mailboxes and GMail apps that many iOS users are already using.

It’s good and necessary that Apple has dramatically updated its core iOS apps: they’re the apps that many users will first experience iOS through. But taking a few key features from its competitors and third-party appmakers here and there isn’t enough.

If it truly wants to retake the core of the iPhone – and fend off Google, Facebook and Amazon – that means Apple’s productivity apps and understanding of the web have to be better than what Google is offering; its social and communication tools to be better than what Facebook is making, and its entertainment content, from movies to music to books, needs to surpass that of what Amazon can cook up.

And that’s likely to involve an upgrade to the core experience that rivals nail, but where Apple struggles: cloud services. iOS 7 will bring some welcome upgrades to those apps, and if Apple ever gets its cloud act together, it could entice more iOS users to remain fully within the Apple experience.

If you’re in the market for a way to hook your musical instrument up to your Mac or iOS device, and have a need to do multitrack recording on your iOS device, IK Multimedia has recently released two new products that may help you: iRig HD and AmpliTube Studio.

iRig HD is an upgrade to the old iRig adapter, and Amplitube Studio is a $26 in-app purchase in the AmpliTube app. In this post, I’ll talk about my experiences using these new products and how they might integrate into my musical workflow. I’ve become quite a fan of IK Multimedia’s products over the last few years, and I was very curious to see how these new releases performed.

iRig HD

As I mentioned in a previous post, I’m strings-deep into band rehearsals. Aside: isn’t that new-band smell great? While I used my USB Fender Stratocaster for a lot of the practice time, I also used the iRig HD ($99) for a lot of it. I’m going to spend a lot of time saying nice things about the iRig HD, so I’m going to start by saying I wasn’t overly thrilled with its predecessor, the iRig.

The iRig used your iOS device’s headphone jack for its input. As a result the sound quality was iffy. The iRig pretty much earned a spot in my truck’s glove box for use if I was buying a guitar and needed a tuner.

The iRig HD solves a lot of those problems. Instead of using your headphone jack, the iRig HD ships with USB, 30-pin and Lightning connector cables. As a result, the audio quality is much improved. The only downside is that you won’t be able to also charge your device while using it.

Unlike the Apogee Jam (which currently does not come with a Lightning connector), I found the iRig had a very solid connector to its main unit. It comes in two pieces: the main piece where you connect your instrument’s 1/4″ cable, and then the cable that connects this unit to your Mac or iOS device. The Apogee Jam’s connector was a tad flimsy. The iRig HD cable connector reminds me of the old Apple ADB connectors and fit snugly.

Over the last two weeks, I’ve been using the iRig fairly often and haven’t had any issues with it. I think it’s well worth the $99 asking price, especially if you have an iPhone 5.

AmpliTube Studio

The other new product IK Multimedia will release on Thursday is an upgraded Amplitube app, with a new Studio module. Previous versions of AmpliTube had an in-app purchase for an 8-track recorder, but Studio turns your iOS device into more of a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). While Apple has its own iOS DAW with GarageBand ($4.99), it’s a little limited. The in-app amps aren’t that good, and you have to remember to tell GarageBand to record more than a few measures if you want to record a full song. While GarageBand does support Audiobus now, it’s still a limited recording platform.

AmpliTube Studio is a step closer. I much prefer AmpliTube’s amps over GarageBand’s, and having a better DAW within AmpliTube is a win for me. AmpliTube also comes with a decent little drum looper, where you can program intro, outro and verse drum loops. It ships with a set of Rock loops, and others are available via — you guessed it — an in-app purchase.

The app uses a grid layout similar to GarageBand, and you can move, cut, copy, paste and punch-in. I was able to record several minutes of audio without any issues. While the audio quality certainly wasn’t pro-level, it was good enough to piece together song demos. The biggest problem I have, is trying to figure out where the Studio module would fit in my workflow. Just about every time I decide something I’m working on needs multi-track recording, I end up deciding to do it on my Mac with GarageBand. I think it will be fine if someone is on the road, and just wants to layer some guitars and vocals for a demo. What makes it very hard is there still isn’t a good way to capture multiple input sources on an iOS device.

Final thoughts

I’m very happy with the iRig HD. It’s been a product I was eager to get my hands on since it was announced at the National Association of Music Merchants show (NAMM) earlier this year and the release does not disappoint me. It’s a product I can see myself using for quite some time.

AmpliTube Studio earns high marks for a nicely designed product that works well. I’m just not sure how often I’d use it. That said, if I were a touring musician, using AmpliTube studio and a guitar on a tour bus sure would be convenient.

Know before you go: the best iOS apps for planning for, getting around and navigating the lines at Disney World.

One thing you will not see in Disney’s own Carousel of Progress is a huge crowd of people being led around an amusement park by their iPhones. But that is exactly what you will see when you visit any one of Disney’s theme parks. So what is it that is so interesting on all of these iPhones? Disney theme park tourist apps. Where to go, what to see and even how long it will take.

I can attest that the following are the best apps out there for a Disney trip after field testing on a recent visit to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

Before you go: Trip planning with ebooks

You should first look to see if your local library has any up to date ebooks that you can borrow. I was able to check out a couple of titles before our trip to Disney World began. Additionally there are several titles available on Amazon and iTunes for your Kindle and iBooks app. One of my favorites is The Unofficial Guide Walt Disney World ($9.99 Kindle, $9.99 iTunes). Being able to read and bookmark travel guides on my iPhone saved me from packing heavy books in my carry-on.

Guidebooks are better as apps

Beyond electronic books you will also find some great informational guides in the App Store. One provider in particular, TimeStream Software, has a couple of iPhone apps published under the title of Notescast that you will find have the same insightful information as the best-selling books. The difference is that the apps are much easier for navigating and finding what you are looking for when you are in a hurry inside the various parks. In particular their Walt Disney World Secrets ($1.99 iPhone) is a great supplement to any ebook you may already have in your library.

Searchable maps of nearby attractions

Both Apple and Google have decent satellite and regular maps of the parks in their mapping apps. However, you will find that specialized maps that include the ability to annotate the maps with interactive pins that highlight nearby attractions will help get you to where you want to be. VersaEdge’s Disney World Magic Guide ($4.99 Universal) does exactly this by including the wait times alongside the location. Seeing the wait times on the map may change where you are headed in the first place. The app also comes with a database with details about the attraction as well schedule for your dinner reservations. This is something that neither Google nor Apple has in their maps.

Avoid waiting in line

There are two things you will want to keep track of when visiting Disney’s attractions: wait times and FastPass times. While VersaEdge’s Disney World Magic Guide will show you the wait times on a map, what it does not do is show you are the times that the next FastPass is available. FastPass is Disney’s way of controlling large crowds by allowing everyone a chance at getting to ride their favorite rides at least once. But FastPasses do run out. Knowing that the next FastPass for SpaceMountain is for 9 p.m. when it is just 11 a.m. is a good indication that you had better run over to Tomorrow Land and get one before they run out. And the busier the park is, the more likely the FastPasses will run out.

Disney’s own My Disney Experience – Walt Disney World (Free, Universal) proved to have the most accurate and up-to-date FastPass information in each park. Disney’s app also has the current wait times, maps and database of attractions. While it did not have FastPass information, I did find that VersaEdge’s Disney World Magic Guide was more responsive while looking up nearby park information.

Have some fun too

Not every app is about managing your time and keeping track of where you need to be next. One of the fun apps will help you find the Hidden Mickeys ($7.99, Universal) all around the resort. You may have seen the book of the same title in various bookstores for about the same price, but the app is much better than the book. Unlike the book, the app will show you how close you are to each hidden Mickey when you are in the park using the device’s GPS.

Another great app to have is actually not a native app. When in the park, you will notice that Disney has a program called PhotoPass where you can be photographed in front of some of the main attractions in the park. There is a mobile web app on Disney’s site that you can create a home screen icon for. This will allow you to view the photos Disney’s photographers take right after they take them.

And finally, there is another great Notescast app that focuses on one specific historical Disney feature. While shopping on the Magic Kingdom’s Main Street be sure to check out the Main Street Windows (Free, iPhone). All along Main Street each window has a business title, which is a tribute to various Disney employees and major contributors to various Disney productions over the years. It is sort of like Disney’s own version of Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.

While these apps are all specific to visiting Disney World in Orlando, there are versions for its other theme park locations. Be sure you are specific when looking for other books and apps about Disney. You don’t want to get all excited about riding Gadget’s Go Coaster realizing later that it is only at the Anaheim and Tokyo Disneyland locations. Just be sure to devote a little time to loading up your iPhone with apps that will help you enjoy your trip to Disney this year.

Yes, there is another iOS camera app getting ready to hit the App Store. But before dismissing Analog Camera as unnecessary in the world of Camera+, Instagram, Facebook’s own Camera app and countless others, it’s at least worth checking out based purely on the team behind it. Analog Camera was created by Realmac Software and the same team who created the elegant and useful Clear task-organizing app.

The app isn’t available just yet. But Realmac put up a website today with a very brief video showing how it works and what it will look like.

Realmac founder Dan Counsell told me via email that the camera app “was built with the same principles of Clear in mind.” That means employing a very simple user interface, flat, uncluttered design and an app that’s focused on one main thing; in this case taking and sharing photos.

Analog Camera is a good-looking app. Yes, it includes filters like every other photo app, but it also allows for a quick succession of shots to be taken. Then there’s a grid for helping to more easily select the best shot taken and best filter.

Analog Camera also includes easy sharing within the app to Facebook and Twitter; so it’s a camera app with social features, but unlike Instagram does not come with its own attached social network.

Realmac expects Analog Camera to hit the iOS App Store “later this month.”

With Mother’s Day just five days away, it’s already too late to send your artistic masterpiece from iPhoto for printing with Apple – the cutoff was last week. But that does not mean you’re out of options for photography-related gifts when it comes to doing something nice for Mom. The following apps can be used to tap into your creative side and make a customized gift.

Create an original photo collage – Shape Collage ($1.99, Universal, $24.99 Mac) will arrange your photos into just about any shape imaginable. You could arrange your photos to resemble a word, phrase or sentence. You can even arrange your photos into different shapes like flowers, symbols and hearts. The Mac version will even allow you to save the collage as a Photoshop file, where you can re-arrange each photo individually.

Shape a mosaic of your own – Mosaics take every day objects and create an image by placing different size, shape and colored versions of the objects next to each other. cf/x also does this with their Mosaic ($19.99 Mac) app. Take a photo of your mom’s favorite garden or landscape and use it to creat a really cool image that looks like you put it together yourself by hand. The controls let you choose how realistic, or artistic you want the piece to be.

Discover a photo mosaic – Take a large set of photos from your childhood and have them arranged to resemble a single more recent photo of yourself — it is a magical process to witness. AndreaMosaic (donation, Mac) has been doing just this for just over 10 years now. AndreaMosaic also has the ability to create your own library of photos to make the final mosaic from rather than use stock photos from a shared online repository.

Remember a comic moment – Take one of your favorite scenes from your life that you love to talk about and document it with Comic Life 2 ($4.99 iPad, $29.99 Mac). You can even cartoon-ize the photos and distort the images for dramatic effect. Comic life also has a library of speech bubbles to help you bring the photos to life.

Craft some thoughtful text – What you want to say is up to you, how you say it is another matter entirely. With Art Text 2 ($19.99 Mac) you can express yourself with an endless arrangement of textual options. Make your words glow with style by adding layers of borders, shadows and even adda glossy effect to the font itself.

Using your iPhone, iPad or Safari on your Mac, you can send your photos directly to a nearby Walgreens (free on iPhone, iPad and Safari) for same-day processing. This same-day processing includes creating Posters, Canvas Prints and even Photo Books.

Any one of these apps can be used to create a single piece of artwork worthy of framing for Mom. You can consider combining several techniques together and craft your own card to accompany whatever else you are getting for Mom this year. Even when the mother on your shopping list is your spouse, the above can be great art projects you can do with the kids. Show them how they can use their iPhone, iPad or iMac to create something really special this Mother’s Day.

It’s been just a few weeks since iOS email app Mailbox launched and already it’s already been snapped up by a larger company. Cloud storage provider Dropbox on Friday said it will acquire Mailbox. The company did not disclose the purchase price.

In total, Mailbox has taken 1.3 million reservations and is processing 60 million emails per day, according to Mailbox’s own blog post Friday. Right now, the app is only available to iOS users who have Gmail accounts. But they eventually want to be more email providers and mobile devices and that’s why they agreed to the Drobox acquisition. To scale the service more quickly they decided to join Dropbox, the company said.

Dropbox co-founders Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi wrote on the Dropbox blog that they liked that Mailbox is “simple, delightful and beautifully engineered”:

After spending time with Gentry, Scott, and the team, it became clear that their calling was the same as ours at Dropbox—to solve life’s hidden problems and reimagine the things we do every day. We all quickly realized that together we could save millions of people a lot of pain.

Dropbox doesn’t replace your folders or your hard drive: it makes them better. The same is true with Mailbox, it doesn’t replace your email: it makes it better. Whether it’s your Dropbox or your Mailbox, we want to find ways to simplify your life.

One of the hallmarks of Mailbox’s debut was clever marketing: they put users in a queue and only let in a few at a time. This had the effect of a velvet rope outside an exclusive club, causing hundreds of thousands of people to sign up and wait to be let into the service right away.

But the popularity is also due to a huge problem that almost everyone shares: email. Mailbox is just one of many startups trying to solve the problem of too much email.

Heartbroken over the news of Google Reader's demise? RSS isn't the only way to keep up with the news. Here are five news reader apps for iOS that we like.

If you use RSS feeds to keep up with the news, Google probably broke your heart yesterday by announcing that it’s shutting down Google Reader on July 1. Reader, aside from being a great web RSS reader, provided the syncing backend for many RSS readers in the iOS App Store, including Reeder, Mr. Reader and Newsify. I’ve been using Google Reader to sync my feeds for five years, so I’ve come to rely on it heavily for my news.

But recently I’ve also come to rely on several news aggregation apps (most of which are really just RSS readers with special features). Real RSS readers will still be around when Reader’s gone, especially given the market opportunity Reader’s demise presents for companies like Digg — which announced Thursday it would pick up where Google Reader leaves off — but it can’t hurt to have options for consuming news on your mobile device. Sometimes I’ll find articles in these apps that I wouldn’t have found in my more focused list of RSS feeds.

Here are five good iOS apps — all of them are free — that you can personalize to help you keep up with the news:

Zite

Zite bills itself as a personalized digital magazine, and it’s actually been around for awhile (it was acquired by CNN in 2011). Zite’s interface is kind of boring, but it’s also straightforward. When you first start Zite, you can choose from a list of default topics for it to pull articles from. You can also add your own topics through the search interface. A newsfeed displays rectangular article previews for your top news. You can like or dislike the articles Zite shows you, and that data is used to find other articles you might like. You can switch between topics by swiping left or right, and view which topics an article has attached to it by swiping up.

Flud

Flud is unique in that you can follow articles that other users are sharing. Each user also gets a Flud iQ score, which measures your influence on the service based on your activity. Besides following other users, you can also search for new sources to draw from, which are added to a favorites menu. Flud’s interface is more interesting than Zite’s, with large article previews and pretty red buttons. However, the large previews mean only two article previews can fit on the screen at one time, so scrolling through them ends up feeling tedious at times.

Circa

Unlike the others on this list, Circa doesn’t show you full articles from a source. Instead, Circa has editors that condense articles into nuggets of information called “points.” Rather than reading the full text of the article, you swipe through a list of points. Because the articles have to be condensed by humans, Circa has a feature where you can follow an article, so you’ll get notified whenever a new point is added to it. You can’t add new sources or topics to Circa, and it only comes with four topics by default. If you’re fine with that caveat and like things straight to the point, Circa’s worth checking out.

Flipboard

Flipboard’s been pretty widely covered by now, but it can’t hurt to throw it in. Flipboard has a sort of homescreen where you can add and arrange topics. As implied in its name, you “flip” through articles rather than scrolling a list, which means you also have to flip through the ones you might not be interested in.The biggest strength of Flipboard is that you can add a multitude of social networks as sources, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Google+. You can even add your Google Reader account as a source — until it shuts down.

Pulse

The thing that stands out about Pulse’s app is its interface. Instead of a list of articles, you’re shown a vertically scrolling list of sources and under each is a horizontally scrolling list of articles from that source. The advantage of this is that it allows Pulse to fit nine article previews in one view. Flud only fits two, for comparison. The disadvantage is that it requires a little more scrolling to get through your articles, since they’re arranged horizontally. The headline text is rather small too, and there’s no way to change it. Old eyes beware.

What’s your favorite news aggregator? Are there any you’ve tried that aren’t on the list? Tell us in the comments.

Google has a lot of information at its disposal, and it’s using it to great effect in its Field Trip app. The app debuted on Android devices last fall, but it just arrived on iOS last week. Using notifications and an optional Bluetooth connection, Field Trip turns your phone into the ultimate tour guide.

It was created by Niantic Labs, which acts as a startup within Google. The premise of Field Trip is very practical: Whether you’re interested in random historical or architectural trivia, are looking for fun things to do with your kids, want to see what local stores are offering deals, or just where the new speakeasy or hipster donut shop is that everyone’s been talking about, Field Trip can show you. Using the iPhone’s location services, the app will show you stuff as you pass by it. You can set your preferences for how often you get the notifications and how much or little you see of each source’s content.

But what it’s doing is basically augmented reality: the phone is using location data to help us interpret the physical world around us. Here’s a quick look at the iOS version:

The folks at YouTube are aware that filming with an iPad can be physically and socially awkward -- it reminded users of the iPad app to "film wisely so your iPad isn’t blocking everyone’s view."

Next time you see someone awkwardly filming with their iPad, you can blame Google for encouraging them. On Thursday the company announced that the YouTube Capture app for recording and quickly uploading videos to YouTube is now available for the iPad and iPad mini. It was initially released in December to work with the iPhone and iPod touch only.

Capture for iPad and iPad mini comes with quick editing tools, has image stabilization and color correction, and the ability to add music to a clip, all within the app. Sharing options include Facebook, Twitter and Google+.

There is no such dedicated app for Android phones or tablets, but that’s likely because direct-to-YouTube uploading is already supported in Android.

The folks at YouTube are aware that filming with a device that is so large it requires two hands can be physically and socially awkward — it reminded users of the iPad app to “film wisely so your iPad isn’t blocking everyone’s view.” But mobile is a huge chunk of its business these days — 1 in 4 YouTube video views come from a mobile device, the company says. So supporting as many popular devices as possible is an important priority.

Sunrise is good for Google Calendar users hunting for a mobile calendar app that's more sophisticated than the default app that comes standard on the iPhone without being overly complex.

Sunrise Calendar was released a few weeks ago, and I covered the launch then. But after using it for a few weeks I can say that it’s become a go-to app for me. And during that same time period, the team behind Sunrise also added a new feature based on initial user feedback: the option to sign in via Google instead of just Facebook.

Sunrise was initially launched as an email newsletter by a duo of former Foursquare user interface designers last year. But they decided to take the same idea — an overview of your day created by aggregating all the various calendars you have, whether from Google, LinkedIN or Facebook — and make it into an app that users can go back to throughout the day to check on their upcoming schedule and appointments.

Below is a video where I walk through how the app works and why I think it’s a good app for those hunting for a mobile calendar app that’s slightly more sophisticated than the default app that comes standard on the iPhone.
