Demand for programmers with Scala expertise continues to grow, according to job postings on Indeed.com. But things aren't that simple. If you cut the data other ways, you can pretty much see what you want to see.

The demand for Scala programmers continues to grow. Indeed.com’s job post charts show the number of Scala job openings posted growing faster even than Ruby job postings late last year.

Of course, as a commenter on a Hacker News item, pointed out, numbers can be sliced and diced many ways. If you look at Indeed.com’s chart showing “absolute” number of job postings, it’s clear that demand for Java skills reigns supreme still.

“The fastest growing languages also happen to be the languages with the least jobs,” wrote commenter Zandana. “I imagine Scala’s growth will tail off a long time before it can compete in [the] sheer number of jobs with JavaScript or Java.”

There’s little doubt that the use of Scala, the brainchild of Martin Odersky, is on the rise. Twitter and LinkedIn are big Scala users. One advantage is it enables Java programmers — and there are millions of them — to keep using familiar libraries and develop web-scale applications.

But then again, these charts only show what parameters are put in. If you add Objective-C to the mix, as another Hacker News commenter pointed out, you get still another view of what’s going on.

This quarter saw Amazon Web Services finally relaxing its public-cloud-only stance and launching services to support hybrid-cloud deployments. Meanwhile, Hadoop players moved to make their platforms more accessible to mainstream BI analysts and database administrators. A new quarterly report analyzes these trends and provides a near-term outlook.

With enterprises now open to hybrid clouds, Amazon Web Services finally relaxed its rigid public-cloud-only stance and launched services to support hybrid-cloud deployments in the first quarter of 2012. On the big data front, the Hadoop players realized very few companies have teams of systems engineers to learn MapReduce. This has meant adding support for SQL and integrating Hadoop with existing data-management tools and systems. In other words, Hadoop has grown up and is now being taken seriously by companies like Oracle and Microsoft. This quarterly report examines these trends as well the exciting M&A and IPO news in this arena. It also includes a near-term outlook for the next 12–18 months.

If you want proof of a skills gap in big data, check out these charts. In the past 12 months, demand for "big data" specialists, including the relatively new data scientist category, have exploded, according to Indeed.com listings.

Thanks to this gloomy economy, many people are looking for work, and many people who already have some are looking for more. The job search sites are good places to start, but not everyone realizes that you can use some of the employment sites to track employment trends. Being aware of trends in the job market is useful, whether you are currently looking for work or wondering what kinds of skills you might add to your arsenal for the future. SimplyHired and Indeed.com are both sites that work well for this purpose.

At Indeed.com’s home page, you can search by job title, company name and location for employment opportunities, but if you go down to the bottom of the home page and click on “Job Trends,” you can get a lot of additional information. At the top of the site’s Job Trends page, seen here, you can enter in either single search terms, or multiple terms for comparison purposes. You can see an example of a comparison in the graph above. I entered “PHP” and “AJAX” as my search terms (separated by a comma), and then clicked “Find Trends.”

As you can see from the chart above, the percentage of PHP-related jobs in Indeed.com’s database has been falling slightly behind AJAX-related jobs since 2007. At the bottom of the chart, I can also jump straight to PHP- and AJAX-related jobs.

Likewise, at SimplyHired’s home page, you can click on “Trends” at the bottom of the page, and you’ll arrive at this Trends page. Here again, to compare trends, you separate your search terms with commas. Below, I entered “Omniture” and “Google Analytics” as my search terms, separated by a comma. As noted below the chart, Google Analytics-related jobs have risen 179 percent since December of 2007, while Omniture jobs have risen 92 percent. SimplyHired’s Trends page calculates these summaries automatically, in addition to the charts.

You can also compare job trends by location. For example, entering “San Francisco Omniture” and “Los Angeles Omniture” will show you percentages of Omniture-focused jobs for the two locations. If you’re looking for opportunities, keep your eyes on both the jobs and the trends.

Where do you look for information about trends in the job market?
