Today, they announced support for Symbian S60 handsets; a platform that has a huge chunk of market share world-wide. The HAVA beta player already supports content streaming to the Nokia N800 / N810 Internet Tablets as well as Windows Mobile 5 & 6 devices, and of course works on computers running Microsoft Windows. There’s a few differences in the HAVA device when compared to the SlingBox, most notably are integrated WiFi and the ability to share the content with up to four clients at the same time.Monsoon will be demonstrating the new S60 client tomorrow at the S60 Summit 2008, so if you’re in Barcelona, you might want to drop by. HAVA owners can expect the S60 client as a free download in the third quarter of this year. The full press release is after the jump and I’ll update with a link as soon as I see it posted.

KLA-Tencor, the No. 4 player in the semiconductor equipment market, on Thursday offered to buy ICOS Vision Systems Corp., a supplier of solar photovoltaic manufacturing equipment. ICOS has a lead in selling equipment that inspects solar cells and LED lights, and has recently signed several multimillion deals to put its inspection tools into unnamed solar manufacturing plants.

That explains the offer’s $465.6 million price tag. Making the equipment that makes chips is a grim business to be in. As chipmakers build fewer fabrication plants, there are fewer customers for the manufacturing equipment, so businesses such as KLA-Tencor and rival Applied Materials are looking for growth. Solar could be the key to that.

The process of making PV chips and solar panels is similar enough for equipment makers to feel comfortable snapping up smaller PV equipment makers. Applied, the industry leader, has spent about $1.4 billion buying companies in the solar space. In February the company closed its $334 million acquisition of Italy’s Baccini, a maker of metallization and testing equipment for photovoltaic solar cell production, and back in August, Applied completed a $483 million acquisition of Swiss solar wafer equipment company HCT Shaping Systems. KLA’s move suggest that Applied’s competitors might be trying to catch up.

Recently, after Vista launched, I read one article about the way Vista installs over Windows XP. Microsoft took a different approach from the past and Vista actually copies its image onto the machine, and then goes through, weeding out the old operating system to make way for the new bling. In the article they ran benchmarks to test whether or not this process resulted in less bloat than a fully clean installation. The results showed that both resulted in pretty similar performance, post install.

I bring this up now, because as we get closer to Leopard (whenever it drops between March and June…) all those who jump on the newly released upgrade will have to decide whether to run an Archive & Install or a clean installation. Last time when Tiger came along, I discussed my migration plan and got quite a bit of feedback. The camp largely rested on clean installs it seemed.

But how does Apple stack up? Does the Archive & Install procedure create unnecessary bloat on the system? Or is it clean enough that benchmarks would be relatively the same (granted new systems would inevitably be a bit faster) in either case?

I’m all for the clean installation. I don’t mind that little bit of extra elbow grease to do it that way over an Archive & Install, and to me, it’s worth that piece of mind. But I can’t help but wonder if this practice is representative of my years on the Windows platform. With so many ‘Switchers’ in the past couple years, I’m betting many subscribe to the same practices that I do. So what say you? Is the clean installation method just a bad Windows-based habit, or good sense? Does anyone have any proof of performance boosts in one over the other?

What happens when you have a reporter get drunk on cheap Press Club of India whiskey? He starts bitching about a fellow reporter. This evening I picked up some juicy gossip. Apparently the last National Public Radio correspondent in India (Some Sullivan chap) was living large. He had a nice place in Golf Links, which is a really posh colony in South Delhi. Like Brentwood in LA or Seacliff in San Francisco or upper Madison Avenue in New York. The rents there are generally about $3000+ in this hood. Do the math and imagine what he was getting paid!) Anyway it is clear that despite working for a “network of the masses” he was not living with the masses. So next time NPR wants to hit you up for cash, well think again.

He was not alone. For instance, Bloomberg’s head honcho lives in Jor Bagh, which is like Presidio Heights in San Francisco. Others have equally posh addresses. But nothing like the New York Times which has this beautiful colonial mansion in the most prestigious neighborhood. Actually my evening mates were ranting against the foreign correspondents who lived in India. They get pretty serious salaries, and something called a hardship bonus. What hardship – two servants, a driver, and a palatial house. I would pay to get a gig like that.

It is no surprise that anything new is ever written – after all luxury begins at home!
