Ginger.io expands to San Francisco

Ginger.io, an up-and-coming Boston area health IT startup, is opening an office in San Francisco.

The company (see disclosure), which grew out of MIT and was a standout at TechStars Boston last year, will retain its Cambridge, Mass. headquarters but morph into a bi-coastal effort, according to a blog post by company co-founder, CEO and data scientist Anmol Madan. The company’s technology lets people use their cell phones to track, monitor and communicate health stats to their doctors or healthcare providers.

“Our new digs are at 965 Mission (around the block from Square, and a few blocks from Twitter), so definitely come say hi!” Madan wrote.

Last month, GigaOM Pro analyst Jody Ranck wrote that Ginger.io’s mobile platform turns a mobile phone “ into a sensor via passive monitoring and human-centered design. This passive monitoring may help predict flare-ups and enable early intervention, which could in turn prevent costly hospitalizations, not to mention debilitating outcomes.”

Ginger.io won last year’s Sanofi-Aventis $100,000 Data Design Diabetes challenge and is one of the area’s shining startups, so any indication that it might look to locate elsewhere hits a nerve. Boston area techies are notoriously neurotic about losing any business to Silicon Valley or San Francisco. So assurances that Ginger.io will keep its headquarters in Cambridge are reassuring. Kind of.
