This week’s Chrome podcast kicks off with news that Google is testing Chrome OS on Intel’s fourth-generation chips, which aren’t due out until June. That opens the possibility for more high-end Chromebooks that will have much better battery life. Chris shares his experiences with Chrome OS so far and we answer a few listener questions including one about rolling back to prior software versions.

We have three tips for Chrome OS users while this week’s showcase extension is for the Chrome browser on Windows and Mac computers. Plus: more about that Skype version for the web you might have heard about.

Our second weekly Chrome podcast kicks off with recent reports of extremely low Chrome OS world wide market share; there’s certainly evidence pointing to the contrary! We also answer a few Chrome OS questions, share our Chrome “extension of the week” and talk about WebP images: Why is Google messing with images on the web?

Yes, Kevin, there is Chrome for Linux; thanks Scot!

Low Chrome OS market share around the world? There’s evidence that suggests otherwise.

Scott wants to remotely access a Chromebook; is that even possible?

Extension of the week: Black Menu. Hat tip to Mattew for pointing this one out!

Chris’s browser tabs keep reloading. Maybe he needs to enable zRAM.

What are WebP images and how can we see them?

Files.app in Chrome OS could use some improvements.

After receiving numerous questions on our weekly call-in podcast about GoogleChromebooks and the Chrome OS, it became clear that listeners were interested in all things Chrome. So in the words of Silicon Valley: we’re pivoting!

Welcome to the inaugural GigaOM Chrome podcast, where we’ll discuss all things Chrome on a weekly basis. That means topics such as the Chrome browser, Chrome OS, Chromebooks, and Chromeboxes are all on the table. And we’ll do that in a short 20 minutes or so, making the audio podcast digestible on your commute, over a meal or just before bed. In another first, our two hosts are actually in a makeshift studio together; normally, they’re on different coasts!

Whether you think they are a Ponzi scheme or the future of money, Bitcoins were all over the news this week as the value of the digital currency crashed. Hard. We get to the bottom of what Bitcoins are and what this grand financial experiment is all about. Speaking of crash, Aereo would like to crash the traditional broadcast TV party with a new way to get over-the-air TV and the big networks are none too happy about it. And speaking of happy, Stacey Higginbotham is ecstatic that Google will soon be putting her on an all fiber (to the home) diet.

Want the creation story behind the Philips Hue connected light bulbs? In this week's podcast we explore that and what people are doing with Hue and what might be next for Philips in the connected home.

If you visit the Apple store you might see a sleek, black package of three lightbulbs by Philips that advertise themselves as being colorful and connected. You might then look at the $200 price tag and walk away. But as George Yianni, the creator of the Hue and a systems architect at Philips says in this week’s podcast, that price tag isn’t too crazy when you look at what you get.

When Philips asked Yianni to create a connected light bulb in 2011, his response was to wonder why people might need or want such product. In the interview he explains what he discovered, how people are using it (both the mundane and the wacky) and talks about how Philips is thinking about adding connectivity to other products. I got the sense that a connected Sonicare toothbrush might not be in the cards. Check out the podcast for all that and some insights from Kevin Toms, the Hue’s SDK designer and developer advocate on the Hue’s newly created developer program.

Facebook unveiled a new look for its News Feed yesterday, and as Eliza Kern reports, it’s big on bigger photos. Facebook’s COO, Sheryl Sandberg, is making news of her own this week, kicking off a national discussion on women in the work place. Stacey Higginbotham and Laura Owen read the book and share their thoughts on the topic. And finally, Hadoop isn’t just a fun word to say, as Derrick Harris explains, it’s an open source tool you’ll be hearing a lot about in the coming years.

It’s another edition of the weekly call-in show where we answer your tech questions. We start off the show with some commentary on phone unlocking and then move on to listener questions about OTT services, Android switchers and Samsung’s influence on Android.

To be a part of the show, just call in and leave a voicemail at 262-KCTOFEL. If you do, we’ll play back the question on the show and answer it. Or you can tweet me at @kevinctofel on Twitter. Each week, I’ll answer as many questions as I can while keeping the podcast to a manageable amount of time: 20 to 30 minutes at most.
