DocStoc, the document-hosting service, has launched an online store and related services that allow members to sell professional documents both through the DocStoc marketplace and through the service's embeddable document viewer. CEO Jason Nazar says he sees it as different from Scribd's similar online document store.

DocStoc, the cloud-based document-hosting service, has launched an iTunes-style online store and related selling features that allow any individual or corporate user to sell documents either through the DocStoc site or via the service’s embedded document viewer. Founder and CEO Jason Nazar said in an interview in advance of the launch that the company intends to become “the premier online marketplace for small businesses, entrepreneurs and professionals.”

Nazar said that the new Docstore Marketplace will allow professional users such as single-practice or small-practice lawyers, accountants and real estate brokers to monetize the documents that they create for their businesses, such as loan or financing agreements, financial statements, mortgage papers and so on. Members can embed a DocStoc viewer in their sites with a “buy” button that takes a user directly to the marketplace, and DocStoc will also be featuring popular documents in its store.

Scribd, another online document-hosting service that allows users to embed documents in their site, launched a similar online store for documents last year, but the DocStoc CEO says that he doesn’t really see the two as competitors. “Yes and no,” he said. “They are similar services, but we have very different businesses. They are focusing on writers, fiction and so on, while we’re very focused on small business and entrepreneurs.” DocStoc has created a library of premium business documents, he said, including partnership agreements, eviction notices, sales plans and so on.

Nazar said that over the past four months the company has signed a number of partnerships with document creation services such as LegalZoom to offer their pre-packaged legal documents through the DocStoc embedded viewer and online store. “We’ve seen thousands of purchases in that time,” he said, with an average purchase price of $20. Members choose the price for their documents, and users can store their credit card numbers with DocStoc to allow one-click purchasing.

As part of the DocStoc service, for the first two months that a document is on sale, the creator keeps 100 percent of the revenue from the item, Nazar said, and then the company and the creator split the sales revenue 50-50. There are no additional fees or charges, he added. DocStoc also provides an analytics dashboard for each member that shows all of the purchases of a document, and allows users to easily modify pricing or change the terms that apply to a download. Members can choose how much of a document a reader can see before they have to buy.

DocStoc, which launched in 2007, is “the largest online repository in the world for official documents,” the CEO said, and now hosts over 13 million documents and gets a million downloads a month. He said the site has seen its traffic climb from just 3 million unique visitors a month last year to more than 20 million uniques a month. Nazar added that the service, which raised $3.25 million in a Series B financing from Rustic Canyon Partners in 2008, is profitable. “We’ve reached a critical mass, with millions of users coming to our site looking for professional documents,” he said. “And this is the next logical step in extending that.”

Working online, you probably need to share documents with clients, partners and coworkers. You also probably wouldn’t mind having a resource at hand whereby you could search, preview, and download a wide selection of documents to use as templates, research material, or benchmarks to help further your own work. Docstoc is a new service that aims to meet both of these needs with a web app.

Docstoc is a free service that allows you to upload and share any document. It supports a wide variety of formats. The document can then be made available for others to view and download, and will be indexed for retrieval by search engines. Optionally, you can also download an uploading and syncing client for the service. You can also embed your documents into web sites and allow quick previewing for your visitors with the Docshots feature.

I’m going to go ahead and point out the worm in the apple up front, so that I can get on to the good stuff. My tests found that the Docshots feature is a little sluggish and occasionally glitchy. It’s supposed to bring up little preview windows, like those you might see with Snap‘s similar link previewing feature, Snap Shots. Generally, that’s what happens, but it can take a while to load, originally leading me to think that the feature wasn’t supported in OS X (it is), and sometimes the image is displayed in only half the viewing area. Still, it generally works as advertised, and it’s nice not to have to open Preview or Acrobat every time you want to glance at a doc’s contents.

Personally, I have two uses for Docstoc’s services with regards to my online work. First, being a freelancer, clients ask me for all kinds of documents all the time, and I don’t have the luxury of just going to the company library and pulling out our template for whatever it is they ask for. With Docstoc, I can at least find examples (basic, if not best-in-class) to base my own, customized version around. Legal, contract and proposal documents are all available, all of which are types of documents that I find myself needing frequently. Even if I already have my own templates established for any of these, Docstoc’s large library provides me with examples to benchmark with and borrow from.

Second, even though I knocked it above, the Docshots preview feature is handy if you have a dedicated documents section on your web site, since it saves people a lot of clicking, opening and closing. You can expand any image to full screen, download, search and find related docs, and the code can be embedded on your own site, so you don’t have to redirect people to Docstoc.com. It also doesn’t cost anything, which is always a big plus for me.

Docstoc is kind of an odd resource, and one which might not be useful to every web worker. That said, if your particular field of online work incurs a lot of paperwork, which can be very daunting if you’re a freelancer working without a network of support staff, give Docstoc a try.

How do you benchmark your paperwork? Have you tried Docstoc? Share your thoughts in the comments.

The company had raised an undisclosed amount of money earlier. The funds put the company on somewhat of an even playing field with competitor, Scribd, which has reportedly raised $3.5 million from Redpoint Ventures, and recently announced iPaper. In comparison with Scribd, DocStoc is focusing on sharing of “business and legal documents” that will eventually help the company get into the lucrative corporate market.
