Comedy Central heavily promoted its Roast of Charlie Sheen on Twitter, and it looks like the bet may have paid off: Twitter users commented more than twice as much about the roast than about the season debut of his former show Two and a Half Men.

Monday night, Twitter was abuzz with comments on both the first episode of Two and a Half Men with its new star Ashton Kutcher as well as Comedy Central’s Roast of Charlie Sheen.

Judging from early tweet counts, it looks like Sheen was #winning one more time: Social media monitoring company Visible Technologies counted more than twice as many tweets about the roast when compared to those about Two and a Half Men:

That result is even more impressive if you consider that Charlie Sheen himself was among those tweeting about his former TV show. But Comedy Central heavily promoted the social media angle of its roast, including the official hashtag #SheenRoast. And it looks like the network also had some help from Amy Schumar, whose appearance dominated the conversation on Twitter:

The drama around Sheen’s very public dismissal from the CBS show may be all but over now that Warner Bros. and the star are closing in on a settlement, but the tweet count from last night shows that Sheen still has a lot of clout with Twitter users. The actor utilized the service heavily to promote a number of unscripted live online shows in March, and and he now has close to five million followers on Twitter.

One could of course argue that the typical CBS viewer may be less tempted to tweet than his Comedy Central counterpart, but the network may see an overall social media bost from Kutcher being on the show as well: The actor currently has around 7.6 million Twitter followers.

Charlie Sheen is making "six figures" with his sponsored tweets, and his appearances on Ustream attract hundreds of thousands of views, despite the lack of any regular schedule. However, the future of his Ustream show is unclear: Sheen said yesterday that the show is for sale.

Think what you will about Charlie Sheen, but it looks like his new media reinvention is actually starting to rake in some big dough: A spokesperson for Ad.ly confirmed today that Sheen is making “six figures” with his sponsored tweets, and new numbers from Ustream show that his live video appearances continue to attract substantial audiences.

Sheen tweeted on Monday that he is looking for a “winning intern with #Tigerblood.” The tweet was an ad for Internships.com, and to date, it generated more than 423,000 click-throughs. Ad.ly clocked 95,333 clicks in the first hour, and Internships.com today said that it has received 74,040 applications for the position.

The results of Charlie Sheen's first sponsored tweet. Image courtesy of Internships.com.

Ad.ly has been running sponsored tweets with a number of celebrities, including 50 Cent, Snoop Dog and Kim Kardashian. The company usually doesn’t reveal how much it pays per tweet, but Sheen published a strategy phone call on Ustream on Monday that reveals he is getting “six figures” for the endorsement. An Ad.ly spokesperson told GigaOM today that this information “is accurate.”

Meanwhile, Sheen is continuing to publish live and archived videos on Ustream without much of a schedule. On Tuesday night, he went on the live streaming site to diss many of his former Hollywood business partners. The appearance featured Sheen by himself, talking straight into the camera, a departure from the talk show format he used for his Ustream debut this weekend.

Sheen’s team had originally announced that he would be back for another live episode on Saturday. He was still able to gather a significant audience, despite the change in schedule. A Ustream spokesperson told us that yesterday’s broadcast clocked 260,176 live views during the eight-minute segment. The total viewcount of the clip, including archived views, reached 839,000 by noon today. Part of that success may have to do with the fact that Ustream featured an ad for Sheen’s stream on the homepage yesterday. Ustream’s spokesperson didn’t want to reveal whether or not Sheen paid for the ad.

It’s still unclear what exactly Sheen’s plans are for the show, which is run as a joint venture between the actor and Wytv, a live streaming production company that was co-founded by the former AOL CEO Barry Schuler and Hollywood producer Brad Wyman. Schuler wrote this weekend in a blog post that Wytv will be the next HBO, thanks to Sheen.

However, the actor himself has been sending mixed messages about the collaboration. Earlier this week, he bashed Wytv’s show format ideas, and on last night’s show, he said: “Sheen’s Korner is now for sale as a sports bar.” Whatever that means, it’s likely to bring in more money for Sheen.

Two and a Half Men lead character Charlie Sheen's very public meltdown should be a cautionary tale for everyone, especially start-ups. Why? Because spoiled-star syndrome can take down and unravel companies as quickly as hit television shows. And what's worse - it impacts others.

Two and a Half Men has been a delicious vice of mine from the first day it came on the air nearly eight years ago. The campy, overgrown, man-child character played by Charlie Sheen was an immensely lovable rascal. Now Sheen’s bad behavior, which looked so cute on the small screen, has unfortunately spilled over into real life, where it’s not so cute and tolerable.

Woody Allen, once said, life doesn’t imitate art, it often imitates bad television. Somehow those words do ring true at the time.

It has been amazing to see Sheen unravel so publicly. His comments about his colleagues eventually became so offensive that CBS (the network which carries his show) and Warner Brothers, the company which produces his show decided to cancel the amazingly popular show – even though they stand to lose a lot of money and face legal action.

Whether you agree with their decision or not, it is undeniable, Sheen’s behavior was selfish, and in the end, it would end-up costing many people their jobs. These are members of the team that helped Two and a Half Men become successful.

Despite the presence of stars, television shows and movies are collective endeavors — like an orchestra. When it works well, you have a television show for the ages. Seinfeld is an example.

Actually, startups are no different. If you put together the right ensemble, you end up building a company that can last a generation. I was there to see Google build an amazing ensemble and that eventually paid off handsomely for one and all. We are seeing Facebook build an amazing team that works in perfect harmony.

Unfortunately, not all technology startups are as lucky. Many of us who have started companies, or have followed them closely, have known of certain employees who develop the spoiled-star syndrome — although it is very different from Sheen’s behavior.

From a tech perspective, the spoiled star-syndrome shows up when an engineer or a product manager or a designer start to act “entitled” and begin believe he is not only awesome, but he is actually superior to others on his team.

From that arrogance follows an inability to communicate and work with others. Then he starts ordering others around and that results in a breakdown of communication. And when that happens, things get ugly. While these problems aren’t isolated to small startups — we know of enough incidents at big companies — when you happen to be a relatively young company, prima-donna behavior can prove to be a death knell.

Let me explain. In the early days of a startup, you don’t have much time. You are resource-constrained — be it money, engineers or time — and you are trying to beat competitors to the market. In other words, you have to basically use your limited resources as effectively and efficiently as possible.

If there are distractions such as a team member who starts to believe he’s superior to others, a large amount of friction is introduced into the system, which leads to the breakdown of the entire production. An employee with a bad attitude can do the same amount of damage as a drunken actor on a television show.

And just like Sheen, perhaps it’s time for those prima-donnas to go — no matter how good or great they are.
