XOHM: D.C.’s network of one is good… if you’re the one
I don’t know if Dave Zatz is the only XOHM WiMAX customer in Washington, D.C. but since the service isn’t officially live there yet, I’m betting he’s among the few and the fast. He trekked up to Baltimore for a $60 WiMAX USB dongle over the weekend, found some Mac drivers and returned to D.C. What did he find? Wireless broadband speeds of 6,254 kbps down and 1,174 kbps back up. Not to shabby for the promotional $30 a month service without a contract. I gather that speeds will slowly decrease as more customers get on the network, but for now it looks like a network of one. Heck, if XOHM was lit up in Las Vegas, I’d bite on a USB modem to use it over during CES come January. Looks like the race between national WiMAX and LTE is heating up…

It’s at minimum a network of 2. I picked up my expresscard modem on 11 October and have been enjoying the same performance.
Geoffrey, between you and Dave sharing the news, you have me thinking of moving to closer to Philadelphia since the WiMAX there won’t reach me here. ;)
Unfortunately, I’ve not had luck yet in Philadelphia. I always get the activation screen and read someone else was having the same results. I’m not calling XOHM about it since I’m pretty sure it must be related to the test status of the city.
Looks like Im driving up to Ol “Balmur: this week. This is to sweet not to jump on. Me and a friend are going to Split the “Two Fer Life ” package. Ill be the JK OTR man on the street reporting in for you once I get it up and running.
>Wireless broadband speeds of 6,254 >Mbps down and 1,174 Mbps back up.
I think that should be Kbps, not Mbps.
No Gordon, it’s THAT crazy fast! ;) You’re absolutely right… I got so excited by the wireless speeds that something got lost in translation from my brain to my fingers. Just fixed it from Mbps to kbps. Thanks!
@Kevin–I just got my first connection in Northern Liberties (Philly neighborhood for those not familiar) and I was able to get onto the Internet–no getting stuck on the activation page. It might almost be time for you to get yourself some XOHM.
DC people can come up to Arundel Mill Mall and get svc and use it in DC Area now. Stop in food court and sign up..
I’m using XOHM here in the DC area, Chevy Chase / Bethesda area to be more specific. I’ve been using the home modem for about a month with great results. At my max, I haven’t seen those download speeds, however I’ve seen faster uploads at almost 3Mbps. I seem to average about 3Mbps down and 1.2Mbps up.
I’m very surprised it’s held up so well, I’m in a horrible area for RF interference. I’m probably within a mile or two of every major communications tower for the area. Being in a high-rise complex of concrete floors and interior walls doesn’t help much either but my XOHM holds up well.
I just got my Xohm modem through the mail. Was very easy by simply lying about my zip code in the initial screen. They will mail it anywhere after that initial screening screen.
Anyhow, it is up and running wired to two Apple Airport Express wireless print/music/internet routers and working like a charm.
I am getting up to 4 Mbits per second download and about 2.5 Mbits per second upload. Twice as fast as my previous crappy Verizon DSL and much cheaper! Go Xohm!
