Warning: Original iPhones May Lose Ability to Use Other SIMs After 3.0 Update
The news today has been all about the iPhone 3.0 update, and I admit I applied it to my iPhone 3G. It’s working as expected with all of the cool new features, but a reader left a comment with a warning for original iPhone owners:
“A few months ago, I switched from my original iPhone to a BlackBerry Bold. Until today, I could take the SIM out of my BB and use it in my original iphone with no problems. Today, I upgraded my iPhone to 3.0 and I can no longer use the BB SIM. When I try to open safari or email it says it can’t connect because I don’t have a data plan. This all worked just fine under 2.2.1. If you have an old iPhone that you are using with some other SIM and data plan, don’t upgrade to 3.0! It does still work with wifi as an iPod touch, but I wish I hadn’t made the change.”
If his situation describes yours, you may want to hold off the iPhone 3.0 update. Thanks for sharing that, Tax Man!

Try manually restoring the phone. I had this happen with one build during the developer beta and full restore fixed it for me.
Same here, the sim from my Bold only works for voice in my iPhone 3g (3.0) no data.
James, TaxMan followed up later in Twitter with a link to the fix. I had the same issue with my iPhone 3G since my AT&T SIM is provisioned for my Nokia E71x. Check out the details here, http://blogs.zdnet.com/cell-phones/?p=1442
Thanks for spreading the word. All is working thanks to that link. This, after I tried all sorts of restores and attempts to downgrade firmware. The solution is working extremely well for me.
I’m not sure if this is your issue, but I have to set the APN again after switching sims.
I’ll walk you through it if needed. janusofzeal@gmail.com
I’m not that interested in Apple products – too expensive and crippled for my tastes – but it seems that whenever they do something new they always give their customers a free kick in the nuts at the same time.
