Viliv S5 With Integrated 3G is Here
The much-anticipated package was duly delivered by the DHL guy, and the Viliv S5 UMPC with integrated 3G is in my hand. I have been getting things set up for testing, so I don’t have much to share, but I will shortly. In addition to the integrated 3G, this model has a 32 GB SSD instead of a standard hard drive like my “old” unit. It looks and feels just like the S5 Premium model I’ve been using, other than the SIM card slot under the battery. Here’s a quick comparison of the two models to tide you over until later. You should know there is another package on the way from Viliv that I can’t wait to see what’s inside. :)

Pocketables.net is reporting that some Viliv S5′s have been shipped from the factory with viruses installed, it would be prudent to do a scan before connecting to any network.

I have been watching that discussion unfold. I have not seen a virus on either of the units I have now and don’t see a pattern with those they are reporting have a virus. It’s a strange situation they are reporting.
JK, if you don’t mind me asking, whats the name of the blue windows theme on the non 3g viliv?
It is this theme:

James, is the integrated 3G such that I could just transfer the SIM from my HTC Advantage to the Viliv S5 and then be good to go? Or is it locked in some way? Hope this makes sense.
The S5 is unlocked, just plug in a SIM and go. I am testing it now with T-Mobile EDGE.
So now what happens to the MiFi?
set aside like last weeks model?
Does the modem support 3G service from ATT and Tmobile, and in any case you could swap the modem with a verizon (CDMA) version.
Speed test?
battery life?
Heat?
performance?
Its no fun living through someone that gets all the cool toys :(
The MiFi is my most useful mobile device and is going nowhere. This S5 is a test unit and while some like integrated 3G I find it much more restrictive than the MiFi solution.
The radios in the S5 support ATT and Tmobile (EDGE) and pretty much every other GSM network. It does not and never will support CDMA.
Well I meant that you could swap the modem, like from the Verizon U727 modem, it had a Mini PCI modem that would work with this devce, sorry about that.
This device is so small it’s not made for opening up very easily.
I will be interested in your comparison of the SSD vs HDD when you have the chance.
Also, what is the OS? My guess is XP, but I’ve read some come with Linux, though I’m not sure which distro.
It is XP and I am going to run benchmarks soon to compare the two. My feeling from using it a few hours is it is no faster than the HDD version. This is not surprising as it all comes down to the speed of the SSD.
You might get a few more run time with the SSD.
Actually a lot depends on the particular SSD in the device. Not sure which SSD is in the S5.
I am having trouble with gps module like other people, but I wonder what driver should be listed under the device manager tab. I am concerned I deleted it so then i roll it back but still i can not get even the Xport program to find the gps module.
Any help??
I am using Microsoft s&t
Microsoft S&T needs the GPS port to be 4800 baud. You can find the Viliv tool here to do that.

What comm Port is it set too, should be Comm #1 at a buad rate of 9600, you can go to http://www.myviliv.vom and download the driver, if you cannot install it, look in the device manager for something using a comm port, update and point to the driver you downloaded.
One of the biggest technological mysteries for me has always been the question why a device with a 3G capability can’t communicate with the network for cell calls as well. Adding a software stack should be relatively simple or at least doable. I am serious – what is so darn complicate in adding that to XP and allowing you to use the V5 at least as an occasional outgoing phone.
Even if it is a silly question – please don’t hesitate to educate me :)
