Verizon Pushes BlackBerry Over iPhone in Latest Sales Figures
The race for the top smartphone based on sales is always fun to watch, and figures released today show RIM BlackBerry topping Apple’s iPhone in the first quarter of this year. Verizon has been running an aggressive “buy one get one (BOGO) free” promotion that is credited with nabbing three of the top five smartphone slots. The BlackBerry Curve gets the top nod over the iPhone due to its availability on all U.S. carriers. The oft-maligned Storm is still a hot item, as it makes No. 3 on the list.
The top five list:
- RIM BlackBerry Curve (all 83XX models)
- Apple iPhone 3G (all models)
- RIM BlackBerry Storm
- RIM BlackBerry Pearl (all models, except flip)
- T-Mobile G1

> … as it continues to be one of the top-selling smartphones in the world
Shouldn’t it be in the US? (since that’s what the NPD stats are for).
Looking at those numbers (and I should probably post this to that other topic), it’s interesting to see how Win Mobile and PalmOS are completely gone. The latter of course not being very shocking, but if you just look a few years back, RIM was mainly targeting business users, Apple and Google were not in the market, and Palm/Microsoft slugged it out in the consumer smartphone space (which these numbers are tracking). What does that tell me? No matter how entrenched the market participants seem to be, things can change very quickly and dramatically.
