U.S.I.T.C.: all uR nu Qualcomm phnz bLong to n0bdy
Just a quick overview and update on the current Qualcomm chipset situation since we touched upon it last night with the Shangi-La Vista / Windows Mobile hybrid device. Qualcomm was found to have infringed on some Broadcom patents earlier this month. As a result, any new or future handsets based around Qualcomm chips are not allowed into the United States for sale. Phones that were available prior to the formal findings can still be sold; phones that were already in the pipeline for availability are OK too: case in point with the HTC Mogul that hit this week with Qualcomm innards.
Qualcomm is appealing the ban to a federal court since just today the U.S. International Trade Commission upheld the ban and denied Qualcomm’s request for a stay. We’ll be keeping an eye on the situation because the latest and greatest handsets aren’t very useful if you can’t get ‘em.
