To compensate for the lack of a mic/speaker on the dock, you can try this: buy an inexpensive usb sound adapter and plug that to one of the USB ports on your dock. I've seen some usb audio adapters such as those by Creative that support 5.1 and SPDIF connections

James...

Yes, I just got home and tried setting the docked-undcocked profiles myself, and they do work awfully well. It hadn't occured to me that yu'd be able to set different profiles for the external monitor depending on whether you had the 1610 open (notebook) or closed (tablet) when you dock it. Very nice.

I'll probably write something tomorow about my microphone woes. (I set it up with Dragon Naturally Speaking about 20 minutes after I got it out of the box and it worked quite well, biut now it's disastrous, and just listening to a recording made with the Sound Recorder accessory makes it obvious why. Either something I installed clobbered the audio, or I have a lemon microphone.)

Juan Miguel - from the usage scenario you have described the UMPC wood suit you just fine, and it would be cheaper too.

LKraven- I do not hear the noise you have described. You should return your unit for a replacement or a repair.

Steve Krug-the Fujitsu Tablet Controls did the trick! You have to manually set each profile but once you do the Tablet makes the appropriate switch automatically! You da man!

James...

Just read your excellet-as-usual piece about the dock here at a bowling alley (my son is in a Japanese arcade game tournament) on my p1610, and while I was poking around formehting else, I came across docked and undocked display profiles in a control panel called "Fujitsu Tablet Controls". Have you tried them yet? Seems like you save one profile while docked and another while...undocked. Don't know if this will do the trick, and you've probably tried it already. Gives me a reason to finaly plug in my dock and see if it works, but it'll be hours before I get home.

Boy, do I wish this thing had even a tiny touchpad. But other than that, it's some piece of work. (Oh, and the fact that even thought the mike was the best built-in I've ver used when I took it out of the box, now all of a sudden it's whiney and noisy and underater-soudning sometimes. Which I relaly need to figure out, because "carry it around all the time" speech recognition is what I bought it for. But that's a question for another day, when I have a full-sized keyboard.

James: about the display problem... I used to have the same issue with my old P1510. I think this link may give you a hint to solve your problem, as it did mine.

Nice read regarding the port replicator. Quick question for you, I have a P1610 also, and I notice that whenever I dim the screen from maximum brightness or turn the screen off, there is a high pitched whine/buzz/hum that emanates from the notebook... does yours exhibit this behaviour?

Hi, thanks for the content, its been great reading - and very well done video reviews.

A question: I am deciding between a UMPC and this small tablet (love the fact its touch sensitive). I already have a good laptop (14.1" Asus A8Js), cant decide between the two. Can you post a picture of them side by side, plus some thoughts on why choose either? Sure, having a keyboard is lovely... but if what you want is a web browsing terminal, light emailing... and something very portable, maybe a UMPC is better?

An advantage to this tablet is the battery life, and that in the end, yes, more potential (faster hardware, the keyboard). Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Juan Miguel Venturello
