Top Google Trends for Smartphones in 2009
Chippy over at UMPCPortal took a look at Google Trends to graph some mobile computing terms, and his findings are worth checking out. Plus they got me to thinking about the same trends for the major smartphone players, so I ran a graph of my own. This graph shows the popularity of the following terms on Google for 2009:

The iPhone dominates the Google trends for 2009, much as it has done since the initial launch. I’m surprised to see that the BlackBerry leads the rest of the pack, followed by the Pre, Windows Mobile and lastly, Android. This is from the top graph, which shows total search volume on Google.
The bottom graph is the news reference and paints a different picture. It shows that the Pre has dominated the news, followed by the iPhone, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile. I’m especially surprised to see that Android doesn’t trend well on either graph.

The results may be skewed a bit, because some of the terms refer to a device and others an OS.
e.g.
iPhone/Pre/Blackberry: devices
Android/Windows Mobile: operating systems
Oh, this is not scientific by any means. But I would have to state that BlackBerry is also an OS, and since the Pre and iPhone are single device (nearly) platforms, they are too.
This is not really surprising to me at all – particularly the search chart. I think it will be a while (1 or 2 more years) before Android has any real mainstream traction beyond the high-tech crowd – and it is even sliced pretty thin with that crowd. The Pre gets/got more press because of Palm and past history. And every mom, high schooler or college kid either has an iPhone or a BB….
