James, you consistently, simultaneously raise my ire and earn my respect by sticking your neck out on the OS warfront. I think your effort in this post is the most thoughtful and convincing argument you've made and you sounded less like a fanboy than you did someone who was almost disappointed by the certainty of your hard earned objectivity. I too switch between both OSs everyday (well Windows 7 not Vista) and even 7 is now beginning to bog down a bit on my Dell E6400. Yes, it is just a release candidate build and I have added a fair amount of registry changes through installs and uninstalls of various apps over the past 2.5 months, but it does have me a bit worried for the RTM build. Meanwhile Snow Leopard keeps baking to perfection I would bet......

Often Apple has the advantage by making good modern hardware choices, which you only get on PCs if you know what to look for.
However that's not the case with the T400; that has good specs, so it's surprising that there are performance issues.
Wake from sleep is surprising. My system, vista desktop with about the same specs, wakes in 1-1.5s, some of which is the screens recognizing input, and laptops ought to be tuned for faster wake.
Surprising also that there are differences in Wi-Fi speed. I would think that's down to the wifi chip and no chip is instant, although some are faster than others.
It is true that Vista by being a big operating system may require too much disc access which is obviously going to affect 5400rpm systems more than 7200rpm. Win7 should fix this but SSDs will make loading time almost irrelevant.

Maybe you should try out HyperDrive that Kevin had on the Lenovo netbook. I'd be interested to see what it was like on a T400s, if you were able to.
