The Gadgeteer reviews the USB727 EV-DO modem
I am still in Pennsylvania at the moment awaiting the time to leave for the church to see Kevin get married. This weekend trip is like many others as I brought the one laptop (MacBook) and my Verizon USB727 modem to tap into EV-DO when needed. I’ve only had the USB modem for a few weeks having recently traded it for the ExpressCard solution I used for so long and I am really impressed with this USB solution. It works well in any device I want to use it with as long as I install the Verizon Access Manager software to get it going.
Julie at The Gadgeteer has picked one of these USB modems up for her own use and has published a thorough review of it that even includes some speed test results. Take those with a grain of salt as we’ve told you before because EV-DO speeds are totally dependent on the exact location of the test. It’s a good review with lots of photos showing how far it sticks out of the laptop so give it a view if you’re curious about the 727.

quick question on the usb727,
are you using the verizon access manager software on your mac, or does the modem just ‘plug-and-play’ with osx leopard?
I’m curious about the relative market penetration of CdmaOne/CDMA2000/EV-DO and GSM/UMTS in the States. Is one dominant, or are they evenly split?

Yikes, this thing does stick out way too much for my taste.
