OK, so the floating TIP works in all the fields except the mainbody "field". Maybe it is not a field? Sound, like others are experiencing the same thing. Thanks for the help yall.
Merry Christmas!

This is how my settings have been for awhile, floating TIP for me works in all aspects of Gmail save the main compose section; which I use the docked version. Not bad since I write long emails any way.

I tried that and couldn't get the floating TIP to fire in gmail... the static one on the toolbar, however, worked fine after invoking that option.

Weird.

Since then, I've resorted to busting out the keyboard when hitting the gmail. (Hmm... anybody tried GoogleTalk with the TIP yet?)
