FWIW, I agree with James that it’s awfully hard to “bump” a tool I’ve adopted and integrated into my system. The switching costs can be pretty high, as in the example James provides regarding OneNote and EverNote. That having been said, I am using EverNote for a completely new project I’m just beginning in parallel with OneNote and am really enjoying the official version – especially the Firefox integration.

Your point about mentioning if we’ve adopted a tool is a good one. We are pretty good at indicating when we HAVE adopted a new tool but don’t always mention when we don’t. From my point of view (Marc’s may be different) the core tools I use would be hard to knock out of my toolkit and I don’t want someone who is looking for a new tool to think the program is not good. There are a lot of issues when changing tools and in this instance there is no way to import all my OneNote files into EverNote so it would be hard for me to switch. Not that EverNote is not a nice app, just that it would be very difficult for me to switch.

Your suggestion that we should indicate how it compares to our existing tools is a very good one and something I will try to do in the future.

But here I go… Two comments: First, when you guys review a product (like EverNote in this case), I would really like to know whether you have adopted it as part of your toolbox or not. Most of your regular readers have a vague sense of what products you’re using. If EverNote has supplanted OneNote in your toolbox (or augmented it) I would really like to know that. It makes a difference in how seriously I consider EverNote (or some other product you’re writing about).

Secondly, when you are reviewing apps I would like to know how it compares with what you’re currently using. Mark’s upcoming review of StarDock ought to include a comparison with Konfabulator, for instance.

You guys aren’t normal reviewers, since you’ve engaged us in the “conversation” and told us so much about how you work and what you use. When reviewing apps, please tell us when you’ve adopted a new piece of software and /or how it compares with what you’re currently using.
