Sprint just charged me $18 upgrade fee for the last two phones I upgraded and that was after having the previous phones for at least two years. I tried to negotiate out of it but they would not budge. I did not however pay any other fees for the phones such as shipping costs.

Sprint doesn't charge any fee to upgrade, but unless you're at the 1-year or 2-year mark, you don't get the kind of subsidized discount on the phones that a new user would get.

I've always thought that was pretty shady, since it practically penalizes long-term customers. Then again, I think subscriber contracts are horrible in the first place.
