Sprint Officializes WiMAX Launch Cities for 2009, 2010
Lest you have any doubts as to which U.S. cities are getting WiMAX before others, Sprint is sweeping the unsureness away. Again. Here are the expected 2009 and 2010 deployments in alphabetical order:
- 2009: Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Fort Worth, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Portland, Seattle
- 2010: Boston, Houston, New York, San Francisco, Washington, D.C.
Everytime I read about LTE coming soon, I often see Sprint-centric remarks like, “Sure, LTE is coming. But WiMAX is available now.” (See above pic) If by “available now” one means a very few areas serving a small number of the overall nation’s consumers, I’d say that’s an accurate statement. But is it meaningful?
Maybe it’s just me, but I’m getting tired of waiting for actual deployment news: Sprint’s current deployment plans just keep losing their meaning as time marches on. I know that folks using the service are generally happy with it; we’ve had a comment or two here on that topic and I appreciate the info. Don’t get me wrong: The promise of faster mobile broadband without long-term commitments is definitely appealing to me as well. I just don’t want to have to move in order to enjoy such luxuries. Although if I had to, I’d probably go with Honolulu. It’s slated for service this year and I love warm weather. ;)

Oh yes, Land of the cheesesteak is getting it! Maybe I should buy the U300 (Wimax/Evdo) only sold in Baltimore.
Actually, Honolulu & Maui have had the pre-standard version of Clearwire’s WiMAX for three years now. For Honolulu, it’s not so much a “launch” as it is an upgrade.
No Miami :-(
No Orlando either… or Florida.
Why would NY – Wallstreet’s capital – and the largest metropolitan area in the US get it later than Hawaii, Texas, or North Carolina? Does that make sense?
Even stranger is that Los Angeles, the second largest metro area in the US, isn’t even on the list.
