Sony’s DRX-S70U portable optical burner needs a diet (or a spec check)
This caught my eye over at Crave since I might be in the market for a portable optical drive. I’ve been using a three-year-old USB drive from my old Toshiba M205 with my UMPC for over a year and it’s acting a little flaky. Sony just introduced a new line of optical burners and one of them is a slim, portable burner. The DRX-S70U offers a USB 2.0 interface along with the following write speeds and formats:
- 8X DVD+/-R
- 4X DVD+/-R DL
- 8X DVD+RW
- 6X DVD-RW
- 24X CD-R/RW
I’m sure I can find a burner under the $129 price tag for the DRX-S70U and there has to be models that are lighter. At 2.7 pounds (which just doesn’t sound right to me), the burner would be heavier than my Samsung Q1P that I’d connect it to! The search continues…

Kevin,
I personally use a Plextor PX-608CU. Its small, thin, light and usb powered. A great companion to my P1610. Although it costs around $150, its worth it.

How is this new Sony drive powered? Most of these types of drives require a separate power adapter. The Plextor requires 2 USB ports instead.
I second Kornel’s recommendation. I’ve had the PX-608CU for a few months. People at school and work are always amazed by how slim it is and that it doesn’t need an additional power supply. I carry my Rosetta Stone Japanese CD in it so I can study on my X60 Tablet anyplace when I have downtime. It’s quite fast to write, and the box seems to list hundreds and hundreds of formats that it will support (grin).
