Send files remotely over web or phone with new SugarSync feature
The good folks over at SugarSync pinged me yesterday to share news of a new feature they’ve added: file sending. This is a pretty logical step for the service that easily syncs up files across Macs, PCs and mobile phones: if your files are synced up on the SugarSync servers, why not have the ability to send those files to other folks. Since your files sit on the server, you don’t need to be at your own computer, or any computer for that matter, to send them.
In the screenshot, you can see that I used my iPhone to log in at http://m.sugarsync.com. I navigated to a file that was originally created and stored on my MacBook Pro, but of course is now replicated up on the servers. Hitting the Send button next to the file initiated the dialog shown. James received an e-mail that included a link to the file so he could download, view and/or save it. In a sense, the service doesn’t just send the file; it actually sends a link to the file. I like that implementation however, as your recipient might be on a slow connection or not want to download a gigantic file, no matter how much they like you. Once the file is actually downloaded, SugarSync will send you a confirmation and then auto-expire the file link in 21 days. There’s no limit to the file size, other than the limits you have on your storage account, which start out at 10 GB. Looks like a nice add-on and time-saver. With other similar services you need to upload your files and be at a computer; in this case, the files are automaically uploaded through the synching process and you can remotely send them.
