With IE7 or FF (probably others too) and a 3-button mouse, you can middle click to open a link in a new tab. Even handier.

I prefer Ctrl T to open a new tab. It's a great shortcut.

And Ctrl W to close a tab.

Firefox has had this feature for some time and IE7 has the same.
