Qik for iPhone 3GS — Records First, Uploads Next
Another software title hits the iTunes App Store and it’s another example of a software title that’s not as full featured as on other platforms. I’m talking about
Qik, the video recording application that just became available for the iPhone 3GS. Like Ustream, Qik is generally used to capture and stream your surroundings. And also like Ustream, the iPhone version of Qik can’t stream live video — its primary function on most other handset platforms. Instead, the software will record your audio and video and then automatically upload it to the Qik site. This first version only works over Wi-Fi as well, although the company says that an updated 3G version has already been submitted to the App Store for review.
Wi-Fi only and no live streaming aren’t the only limitations — the software uses the native iPhone 3GS camera app for the recording. Essentially, you use the Qik app to upload video from your iPhone’s Camera Roll. The only value-add I see so far is the addition of geo-tag data so folks will know where you shot the video. If you’d rather send your iPhone 3GS videos to the Qik website instead of YouTube’s, you can now say, ”There’s an app for that.” Qik can record video directly, in landscape or portrait, for uploads to Qik, YouTube, Facebook and other sites. The application geotags your content, so folks will know where you shot the video. In addition to native recording, Qik can upload video shot with the native iPhone 3GS application — simply choose content from your Camera Roll.

Slightly dissapointing the way this one works. I was excited when I heard it was out but not so much now that I see how it works. I am curious as to why they went this route since as far as I know the jailbroken app streamed live.
I tend to agree with you but once again the question becomes: can these apps not stream live because Apple or AT&T says they can’t?
In any case, the new software isn’t as limited as a I thought. In reading the announcement, it appeared to me that it couldn’t shoot video at all and that it simply used the iPhone’s video function to record. The folks at Qik shot me a note to explain that’s not the case, so I’ll correct that in the post. Qik also shoots video up to Facebook and other sites as well, not just Qik or YouTube.
I’m getting fed up with my 3gs kevin (I’m kevin too haha. i’m brutalturtle on your twitter following). I can’t multitask, I have no today screen that shows me appointments for the day, sling works on every phone but not mine, qik works on everyphone but not mine, I find these limitations unnecessary. I went from an old htc touch on edge to this and now I’m like taking a step back in time.
i am not surewhich one i am begining to hate. att or the iphone… it’s like the MAC. they are great but there is always an exception..
