Palm Pre: Thoughts After Using It a Day
You’re probably getting tired reading about the Palm Pre; news about it appears everywhere you turn. The fact is, the Pre has a lot of people excited in much the manner the original iPhone got folks excited. It is an innovative smartphone, with the potential to break new ground in what has become a jaded market. The WebOS has the potential to become a long-term platform for Palm that can keep the Pre and the phones to come on top of the game. Given the excitement about the Pre, I felt it appropriate to my thoughts out there now that I have used the Pre for a whole day in the real world. This is not a review — it is, rather, a rambling list of things that have become important to me about the Pre.
Hardware stuff
The Pre feels nice in the hand. That is important, as I have used a number of phones and other mobile devices over the years that were actually uncomfortable to use. The Pre is not one of those, and I am still impressed with how small it is.
I am finding it hard to slide the Pre up to expose the keyboard. It may be that it is new and stiff, but it can be hard to push up on the phone to get to the keyboard. Once opened, the keyboard is as easy to use for me as other phone keyboards. I like the rubbery keys and how my fingers hit them firmly and decisively, something I often have trouble with on other phones. I also like how the keyboard is backlit for use in the dark.
The center button on the front of the Pre looks like a trackball, but it doesn’t function as one. It is strictly a button and plays a large role in the operation of the interface. I really wish Palm had enabled its use as a trackball; it would make it easier to spin through lists of things. Instead, you must push on the screen to scroll or select something in a list. The trackball would add good value to this interaction.
I am finding the Pre to be responsive, no matter how much is going on in the background. It can bog down a little doing some heavy things, but not oppressively so. The processor handles normal operations just fine.
The weak area of the Pre hardware is the battery life. This is not that surprising, given how small the battery is, and those who are heavy users, especially of data, should plan on carrying a second battery along. The second battery will have to be charged in the Pre, as there is no external charger available.
Touchstone charger
The Touchstone is freaking awesome. There has not been a simpler way to pop a phone onto charge, and I strongly suggest Pre owners who passed on the Touchstone to change their minds about it. It does take longer to charge the Pre on the Touchstone than it does via direct charging via the USB plug. I had wondered about this before the Pre’s release. Everything I’ve read about wireless charging has touched on how much of the energy is lost via wireless charging like that used in the Touchstone. Palm has done a good job making the Touchstone practical, and it is good for most uses, but if you are in a big hurry and need to charge your Pre as quickly as possible then, you should plug it in.
Software stuff
The user interface on the Pre is the best I have used on any smartphone. I don’t say that lightl. The Pre interface will be the one that others will be measured against going forward. It is simple to get to virtually everything on the system in an intuitive way, and that is the very essence of a smartphone interface. The coupling of gestures with controls that have been thoughtfully laid out make the Pre not only easy to use, but fun. Don’t underestimate the importance of an interface that is fun to use.
So far, I am finding all of the programs on the Pre work well and as expected. The email program was easy to set up and works well. The notification system is extremely well-done — it is nice to get a notice when new email arrives, but it is quietly tucked away at the bottom of the screen. It doesn’t interfere with any active program running, yet is easy to get to via a simple tap on the bottom of the screen.
I am liking the calendar app on the Pre, although I am not seeing that cool accordion in the calendar that hides blocks of free time. I don’t see any way to activate that, either. I wonder what I am missing? I have four different Google calendars being synced, and it’s great to see them all on one screen in different colors. A very cool thing is, when I select only one of the calendars to display, any blocks of time committed not being displayed still show as gray blocks. This prevents adding events for time you don’t really have free, even though the other calendars are not visible.
I had expressed some concern over the Pre’s syncing of contacts to my Facebook contacts. I shouldn’t have been concerned, as I am happy with the way it is handled. I do have some Facebook contacts on the Pre that I will likely never want to contact, but it is very helpful how the Facebook information updated the contact information for those who I do interact with frequently. First up, the Facebook sync added all of those contacts’ photos, which is very handy. It also updated address and phone number information where the contact had included it on Facebook, so my information is now automatically up-to-date without my doing anything. Synergy is a wonderful thing.
The Pre’s media playing is pretty good, nothing amazing, but OK. The YouTube app does as good a job playing those videos as the iPhone’s does, and the Amazon MP3 app makes it a breeze to get new music purchased and added. The speaker won’t win any audio quality awards playing music, but it is loud enough and decent enough to get by.
I use my phones to read e-books a lot with both the eReader Pro app and the Kindle for iPhone, and the lack of these is a big hit to my use of the Pre. I have no word from the companies behind these apps that they are working on a Pre version, but I hope they do. Amazon may very well produce a Kindle for Pre app, as it would go hand-in-hand with the Amazon MP3 app I mentioned that is already on the Pre.
Web browsing
This has to have its own category, as I already made it clear I felt the Pre must do the web well to have a chance. I am very happy to report the browser on the Pre delivers nicely. I find it as good as the Safari browser on the iPhone, but faster — not just a little faster, either; it is much faster at rendering pages and moving around. The multi-touch controls work just as well as they do on the iPhone and, coupled with the speed, it is a nice experience.
I use Google Reader to work with RSS feeds, and the iPhone-formatted version of Reader works fine on the Pre. It’s not quite as pretty nor as slick as it works on the iPhone, but everything works, and it’s nice to use. I also love the bookmark thumbnails in the browser, and off the top of my head, I can’t think of anything about the browser I don’t like. Well done, Palm.
I also am a big Twitter junkie and have been using Tweed that I obtained through the App Catalog. There aren’t a lot of apps in the Catalog yet, but Tweed is a keeper. There’s nothing special about it compared with Twitter apps on other platforms, but it does Twitter well.
I know I’ll get asked what other apps I have installed on the Pre through the App Catalog, so here’s my list so far:
- New York Times
- Pandora
- AccuWeather
- Tweed
- Where
- FlightView
- AP Mobile
- Today Show
That’s all I’m going to get into presently. I am sure there will be plenty of additional coverage of the Pre from both Kevin and me.

James – You need more than 3 hours (I think) free between two entries to have your calendar show the collapsed time. If you have back-to-back entries or only 1 hour of free time (for example), it doesn’t collapse.
Did you notice that when you run Pandora in the background, an icon appears in the notification area and you can pause/rate tracks, similar to the built-in music player?
I love the phone. I haven’t put it down since I got my grubby little paws on it yesterday. However, I do have two major gripes:
1. When syncing pics from through iTunes using albums in iPhoto it just groups all of the pics together. When you go to the picture app they are not in their respective albums. I synced 312 pics and to find the one you’re looking for you have to search through them all.
2. Picture uploads – only two accounts are available. Facebook & Fotobucket. I want Flickr and don’t want to have to use that stupid Flickr email addy.
I’m sure #2 will be fixed with a Flickr app eventually. #1 means I may have to go to manual picture folders which sucks because they won’t be automatically updated when syncing like my smart albums are.
“You’re probably getting tired reading about the Palm Pre”
Actually, I’m not tired. I’m waiting for these “real” reviews/experiences from people who bought it with their own money and are living with the device. That’s what carries weight. So keep ‘em coming!
Thanks for the review James.
How do you find the application switching in practice? It looks great in the videos but is it as intuitive in real life?
Also, how do you feel about the size of the screen? Too small or just right?
Thanks for the first day thoughts, i cant wait for it to hit the UK, It looks like it will go along side my vaio p nicely.
A couple of questions if you have time:
The music you have on itunes/media player, does it sync the album art also?
Is there a touchscreen keyboard for being extra lazy!?
Thanks and im looking for to your thoughts on the pre over the coming weeks
Regards
JK
Here’s a tip: The accordion calendar doesn’t work unless you have around 3 free hours, but if you don’t have many appointments, it’s a pain having to scroll all the way up or down just to see what’s the 1 thing going on today.
So: set up a daily event called “Start of day” at 12:05 am that last 5 minutes and an “End of day” event at 11:50 pm, and you’ll get your accordion fold (and more compact view)!
Thanks… your tip works great.
That’s the trick. Thanks.
Uhm, Awesome suggestion… Now the calendar works so much better… Thanks!!!
Made my day – thanks for the elegant fix!
Okay, I like the pre so far and I say like only becuause I am coming from the centro. Which allowed me to changed my ringtones by catergories. So How do we catergorized our contacts? My biggest concern is I have not figure out how to change my ringtone for my text message alert. The little peeps are not enough alert for me. I can not hear those when the phone is in my purse. Any ideas…
everything else I completely agree with and like about the phone
I was under the impression from all the reviews that you’re supposed to keep it in your hand at all times.
I bought the Pre and love it….I have one question and that is how do I go about downloading additional ringers?
I downloaded songs from my iTunes onto my Pre and they are now all available as ringtones from the Sounds and Ringtones App on the launcher.
Can you briefly explain how those of us who use Outlook would get our contacts to the Pre?
You would have to get a 3rd party app to sync your Outlook contacts, or setup a gmail account and download the gmail sync to your Outlook, then you can have the Pre sync to gmail. Maybe down the road they will have a easier way to do this, unless James has found another easier way. I don’t have a Pre, I just have read about this in a report that some users didn’t like that they had to do all this to sync with Outlook.
HG is right. There’s currently no native Pre to Outlook sync and no 3rd party Pre software that I know of either. Probably the easiest way (without an Exchange account): export the Outlook contacts and import them into Gmail’s Contacts. Then set up the Pre / Synergy to sync with the Gmail account.
Thats not accurate, palm provides a one time transfer from your outlook, palm desktop etc… It is very simple and does not take very long.
To answer a few of the above from MPOV – application switching is a breeze – and once you get used to the gesture area, even breezier!
Size of the screen seems good to me – I came from a Touch Pro which was 2.8″. Browsing experience is like the iPhone/Touch and what you see on the screen varies little between the two.
Album art from iTunes syncs, but no on screen keyboard..yet.
For Outlook – there a few 3rd party apps coming for desktop sync. In the mean time, Exchange will do the trick or you will need to move everything to GMail and sync from there.
I would like to be able to change the fonts in email – mainly make them a bit bigger. And believe it or not, I would like to change the signature format. The font is a gray color, not black – and it looks different from my Exchange sig.
Camera is excellent – but no zoom.
Pandora and iTunes sync rocks – quite literally!
So after the first day how well is the radio working? Is the phone staying in high speed Rev A most of the time or falling back alot? How is the call quality so far? Have you tried your bluetooth for phone calls and A2DP for music? Does it do AVRCP well and does it have drop outs in the audio when backgrounding the music to work with apps in the foreground? I’m also curious to see if you get any deals on Wifi when out at coffee shops. That bundled Wifi from at&t is sure a nifty deal with the iphone…
I have the same gripe as Sharon does, I am missing text messages because I can;t hear them come in…I don’t see anywhere where you can change that….Any ideas? Other then that the phone works very well…I bought a stereo bluetooth headset and it works awesome!
Jeff
Which Stereo Bluetooth did you get?
Well I have to agree the battery life on my palm pre is inadequate by any means. I do consider myself a power user. I use the browser, emails, text, tweed all of it. I do ha e to agree that I would like to be able to assign a specific tone to emails and text messages.
If you disable AIM sync and delete the account the battery life on the phone goes up 800%. There is a known problem with the firmware and AIM sync. To get rid of it you have to go into messaging sign out of aim, then go to preferences and delete the account. Once you do that your battery should last two days of pretty solid use.
What if you don’t have AIM? Is there still an AIM sync that you have to get rid of? I tried going into messaging and signing out of aim, but I don’t have an account. My battery is still pretty bad like everyone is saying on here.
Very helpful information. Thank you :)
The battery is interchangeable with the Centro ( I did it myself) and there are external chargers for the Centro.
How is battery life?
TERRIBLE. That’s why I’m reading this. Phone dies in 4 hours. Four hours sitting on the NIGHTSTAND. When I’m ASLEEP.
Died on me this afternoon. Warned me that battery was low, I needed to take a few pictures with the phone. Took ten, put it in it’s pouch. Removed later- it had died without warning.
Has been plugged into the charger for the last fifty minutes, and only shows the lightning bolt inside of a battery icon, and refuses to power up.
…….. thinking about returning it…..
I got eReader working under Classic. You have to re-enter your reg information to unlock your books, but it works.
I was frustrated with the Google Contacts sync, as Google considers everyone who’s ever sent me an email to be a Contact. I don’t need all those folks on my device. Did I do something wrong in syncing, or do I just need to cull through my GMail contacts a little more diligently?
Jack
Oh right, Classic! I forgot all about that. How’d you download and install eReader?
Got eReader installed and working under Classic. Is there any way to make it display full screen or at least get rid of the “Palm” controls at the bottom of the screen? Takes up way too much room.
I went in and cleaned up my Gmail contacts.. Didn’t take too long. It was a heck of a lot faster than typing all my email contacts into my phone, that’s for sure.. Synced flawlessly.
Jack, there is a way to disable the “Suggested Contacts” but I don’t remember how to do it. I don’t see anything about it in the Settings page, so maybe just delete that group – I don’t have it on my group list.
Hey I’m trying to get ereader to work in classic app — everything works fine until I try to change the color under options – it basically makes the whole classic app crash (it gets that blue screen). So I can only read black text on a white background – not easy on the eyes. Any thoughts? Thanks, Susan in NYC (Pre owner for 3 days now, loving it except for the fact that you can’t search email, big downer).
I love the Pre. I have eReader and MyBible running in Classic without a hitch. After updating to 1.0.2 OTA (take THAT WinMo!), everything runs a lot smoother. Battery life will be an issue until I get a Touchstone for work and maybe even the car (USB car charger + mounted Touchstone sounds fun). I am a very heavy data user, so I am guessing that I will use it quite a bit while it is being charged and will get an extra battery as soon as I can.
Synergy is good. Synergy + Universal Search + the hardware keyboard is excellent. You have to get over scrolling through contacts and embrace the type-to-find style if you have a lot of Google or Facebook contacts.
I cannot wait for the SDK to go public and devs to dig into it. I think a lot of issues will be resolved by Palm, but a lot more will be resolved by clever developers over the next several months.
For a 1.0 device…I am far more impressed than the first gen iPhone. Is it perfect, not quite. But if it was perfect, what would the Palm engineers have to do for the next year?
what bible program do you use? I had Quick verse but I dont think it is palm pre compadiable yet. I miss my bible… I loved it and taking notes
SmartBIBLE has been verified to run on via the Classic emulator (http://www.acrodesigntech.com/palm.html)
Things I like (owned Treo 650, 755p and, a brief stint with the Iphone)
1. App switching is very intuitive.
2. Size, its the perfect size.
3. qwerty keyboard I had the iphone for 72 hours and took it back I really like feeling buttons. Paid $600 dollars for a fancy touchscreen remote and it sits in a drawer. I need that feed back. Have some problems with the “R” button on the Pre not sure why.
4. Web Browsing on par or slightly better than iphone.
5. Touchstone.
6. Great Camera, really don’t care about video so that doesn’t bother me but I can see where it would bother some people.
Things that can be improved.
1. Volume Volume Volume Palm has never gotten this right. I have the volume apps on my previous Palm phones to prove it.
2. The middle button needs to do more like wake the phone up so you can slide the lock button. Push the button slide your finger up and you are off to the races one handed.
3. Needs an optional onscreen keyboard for one handed operation.
4. When I put it in my right hand and scroll through apps and the web with my thumb I keep hitting the power button. Not sure how to fix this.
5. Need to organize contacts better like previous Palm OS I don’t want to have to go through my business contacts to call a friend and I sure as hell don’t want to call a business contact on accident at 2:30am. Those of you that have used Palm phones before you had a contact list for personal and a contact list for work it was so nice.
6. Better way to delete junk email maybe there is I just can’t figure it out without having to open each individual email to delete it.
7. Setting up email was odd for me, might of been the signal @ my moms house which is notoriously bad.
8. Want an instant way to lock the phone. Made a few pocket calls. Power button doesn’t seem to lock the phone instantly. Its all about the feedback.
9. the “R/2″ button. I can hit it 3x’s and might get one R or 2.
I would say it is a pretty solid phone. My mom who has used the Iphone for about a year and a half now really liked some of the features such as the app switching and the great camera. I would say she was over all impressed. Service in her area is sub par imo so I wouldn’t recommend the phone to her.
Anyone tried to sync via Bluetooth?
Flick your emails off to the right to delete them, could not be any easier in the world…. They just disappear..
Very nice thank you for the heads up on that.
Bluetooth:
I have the Blue Ant headset that I love and it works well with the pre but you can only
have 8 phone numbers programmed on speed dial.
Downside the Pre does not have voice recognition as of yet and to me this is
a big thing.
One time download:
Downside with the one time download to bring contacts into you Pre (No Choice)
I have my contacts set up in groups and it only brought in one group and my calendar but there is no way to select the one you want. I now have 544 contacts in my pre when I wanted my other group that I have in outlook to be in my pre. There is a program coming out and this will be available on the Palm web site called Pocket Mirror that should help with this issue and you will be able to sync.
You can upload your contacts to goggle to get this information into the Pre for now.
Has anyone tried to foward a text message? I’ve tried but i have not been able to. My dad sent me some info that i would like to foward to other fam members but i cant foward or at least copy and paste the message. Hmm..
Love the phone by the way. The message fowarding is my only complaint.
Anyone know why my JUNK mail folder doesn’t show up in hotmail? everything else looks good in the email, including exchange with my corporate server.
The Shortcovers eBook app just hit the App Catalog. You can read free books on your Palm Pre and buy the latest best sellers too. Check it out – already over 200 downloads in the first 30 minutes.
How can I make google the default calendar?
When I tried to do the one time one time data transfer, the Pre would only download from my Palm Profile–which is empty. It won’t let me change the default calendar from Palm Profile.
I ended up exporting my outlook calendar to google and then I could sync my google calendar to the Pre, but the default calendar remains Palm Profile and offers no other options. In the All Calendar Day view none of my appointments from google show up, although I can see them grayed out on the weekly and monthly views. I’ve been able to get into some of these events and they are all coded as unclassified. Once I change them to Palm (the only option available) then they come up color coded and I can edit them.
You can change all the preference for the calendar. Once in calendar tap the top left of the screen and then again on “Preference & Accounts”. At the bottom you can add your gmail account, change the default calendar. You can change the color of your differnt by tapping the name of the calendar and then it will display all the differnt subcalendars and gives about 7 colors to choose from. This calendar is the only thing i have figured out.
Does anyone know if you can group your contacts in the PRE. I like to assign Ringers to my various Groups so I know what type of call is coming in. I’d hate to have to assign a ringtone to each person individually?
Any sugggestions would be appreciated
I have not found a way to group YET! come on 3rd party. But what I did was assign the same ringtone for WORK friends to each one of them. Time consuming, but at least I know who is calling in from work now… (I can properly ignore them LOL)
Omg I downloading a ringtone frm myxertones.com and I can’t find any where where it lets me get my ringtones and use it…its annoying me
You have to download my myxer ring tones as iphone files. The pre is only reconized as a iphone. I downloaded 10 last night.
Once you down load to your computer, then hook up your usb cord and drop and drag the ringtones into the Pre drive ringtone folder…then safely remove Pre from usb and assign ringers acordingly it works. Enjoy!
thanks i can finally get the ringtones i wanted from myxertones…it worked perfectly
Ok, I cannot figure out how to download ringers..I used to use funformobile but when I click download it only plays them?? Is there not a way to download without having to use a computer? Also, I use facebook very very often..with the app on the pre I cannot find where it shows me I have notifications..help!
Because of the streaming you can only download to puter & transfer(read that on one of these blogs) you can download as itune or mp3 & transfer via puter only option I have found
Does anyone know how I can exit AIM? When I go under Preferences, “Sign In” and “Remove Account” are grayed out. Is there a way to just Sign Off before deleting the account?
Thanks
Go into messaging, then click on “Buddies”. sign off, then go back into preferences and it will give you the option to delete it.
Anyone know how to charge the Palm Pre with the Touchstone charger and not have the screen stay on at all? I’m concerned about screen burn-in and needless waste of battery. Any tips would be much appreciated!
Also, anyone find a good way to sync standalone Outlook with the Pre (i.e., not using Exchange server) for e-mail (I know CompanionLink does it for Calendar, Contacts, Notes)?
They just came out with a new app. today called PocketMirror. It syncs microsoft outlook.
I have way too many songs in my itunes and want to only download a select few to my pre. Do I just create a play list and sinc those songs? Is that possible?
By the way… I love my Pre!
Yes, that’s exactly what I did. When you first hook up the Pre to iTunes, it will create a “Palm Pre Selection” playlist that is, I believe, every song in your catalog that will transfer. You can delete fom that one or just use any existing one. It sync’s just like an iPod does.
Thanks… can you take a song from that play list and make a ring tone? This is all new to me! But… I am finding it is like when I switched to MAC… easy to learn and hard to mess up.
OH and for those that are not sure of the Pre… my 9 year old son is coveting mine!
How long does it take to fully charge the Pre. Mine died yesterday and has been attached to the wall charger now for 13 hours and I still have that lightening bolt on the front of it. I am a bit frustrated.
About 2 hours. Have you tapped the battery icon to see what the percentage is? The icon will change from yellow to white when complete but it does not go away.
My name is Brian, and I just got my Pre on Saturday by a stroke of sheer luck… They “Found” 10 extra units in the back room when everywhere else was sold out.
I LOVE this phone, but I’m getting a little tired of hearing about how much better the iPhone is by Apple fans who haven’t even touched the Pre.
Yes, the iPhone is nice and all that, but come on.. let us enjoy our phones in peace. There’s no need to tell us that our phone sucks when we just laid 3-400 bucks down on the counter for it.
I hang out at http://www.PalmPreForum.org a site made for all Palm Pre owners.
I created a ring tone in itunes, it is there but I cannot get it to transfer to my pre. Any solutions?
I’m really frustrated..I buy this expensive wonderful phone and I cannot figure anything out. I can’t get ringers without downloading from a computer? I can’t have yahoo messenger? I can’t do anythign that I could do with any other phone I have had…I’m a little disappointed. Am I just not doing it right or does this phone just not do anything I want it to do??
One thing I like about the palm pre phone is that when I install all my music (or use Pandora) I connect my palm pre phone to my Dewalt work radio using a double ended headphone jack. I can listen to music through the radio (aux) like an mp3 player.
I can’t get past the lousy hardware. Plus I don’t want Sprint. There is no robust app development happening or a real SDK. Fix those things, get it on Verizon, and it might be something.
Can’t help you with the hardware or Sprint, although both are fine for me. As far as a real SDK: did you download and install it? What didn’t you see there that you expected?
And there’s plenty of app development going on although it appears as more of a development community than official channels at the moment: http://jkontherun.com/2009/08/07/palm-pre-homebrew-apps/ I added a dozen apps this afternoon and while not as refined and functional as I might like, there’s great promise in what I saw during my hands on with the software.
I’m constantly on the go, in ways that can be hard on things.
1) Does anyone have thoughts about the Pre’s durability?
I’m concerned about moving parts, particularly the mechanisms for shifting to access the keyboard, and their susceptibility to lateral pressure.
2) Has anybody explored extended life batteries?
I’m curious about the standard size as well as those which replace the back door of the phone and theoretically double the capacity, however, they add a few mm of thickness and don’t work with the touchstone. Seido makes one?
3) Has anybody explored hard cases?
Do they provide practical protection, beyond guarding against cosmetic scratches?
1. I wouldn’t say the Pre is the most solid phone I’ve ever owned, but mine is holding up nicely and I’ve used it daily since it launched. My slider is fine and I use it countless times a day for emails and texts. Others have definitely seen issues, so I don’t know if that’s attributable to bad production runs or what.
2. I have the Seidio 1350mAh battery and it’s working just fine, even with my Touchstone charger since the battery is the same size as the original.
3. Can’t answer the hard case question. I’m not one to use cases in general, and when I do, I usually opt for a soft leather one like those from Sena and Vaja. Even with daily usage, I have no scratches on my Pre.
Can someone PLEASE tell me how to delete the songs I downloaded from itunes onto my pre? Somehow a bunch of songs i DO NOT want are on my phone and I can not figure out how to get rid of them! Can someone tell me how to do so?
thanks
Danielle, it’s easy to do this, but you’ll need a PC or Mac. Just connect your Pre to a computer and press the USB Mode on the Pre. Then using Windows Explorer (PC) or Finder (Mac), you can view the files on your Pre. Simply remove the songs that you don’t want from your Pre.
Thanks Kevin, I figured it out not long after I posted the post. I have another question, hoping someone can answer this for me. I NEED ringtones, I can’t stand the default ones any longer. I have tried Ventones.com and when I send the ringtone to my phone it gives me a link, when i go to the link it says my palm can’t find an application to open the file?? is it just me? I’ve tried myxer.com and i am getting no where from them too…can someone please help me!! I have never had problems figuring out every little detail about any other phone including my other Palms…the Pre is just giving me issues. I love it but not the ringtones, any help would be Great!!
In order to have ringtones on your Palm Pre, you have to plug the phone up to your computer and then download the ringtones and place them in the ringtone folder. Also, if you already have music synced to your phone from your computer you can set those as ringtones as well; however, it is better to download the tones from your computer because you can actually pick which section of the song you want. I’ve gotten all of my ringtones from myxer.com
just thought i’d mention that the acordian feature won’t work if any of your “all day” events are marked to show that you’re busy. this accordian view is only for FREE time (not time that you’re busy). i was wondering this myself, and went back and found that my allday events were marked as “busy”, so i changed them to “available” and the accordian showed up. hope this helps.
can anyone tell me how to “guess” with the Pre? Say I want to find my next dentist appointment. With the Treo and/or Centro, I could just hit the number button and the capital letter button sequentially, then put in the word I was looking for. All previous and forthcoming mentions of the word would pop up.
i cannot connect any device to the palm pre, i want to send bits from my old phone to my palm pre, it is discoverable and i manage to pair it to the old phone, but when i tried to send from old phone to pal pre, it says sending failed, im very frustrated and just want my palm bluetooth to work, please help
