Hello jk et. al.,

I have a question/issue that is not exactly on topic, but this thread seems as about as close as any from the hip.

On "TabletPC Buzz" there has been discussion of erratic cursor movements and what is the cause and/or solution. One manifestation of this is for programs to "close by themselves" when the cursor flies to the top right corner and clicks of its own doing. (This is clearly seen by minimizing the window and placing it at least 1/2 inch away from the corner. One can then see the cursor fly to the corner, but nothing happens as there is no window to click on.) Another manifestation is for the writing to become very jagged (as if writing with lightening bolts) or with skipping, as if one was writing with a pen running out of ink. This has been commented on in several manufacturer specific threads on the Buzz, but mostly on the NEC thread through early 2005 into Sept 2005. The thread was filled with stories of what the NEC repair people were doing with the tablets to fix the problem- many different things for the same apparent problem, sometimes working sometimes not. A few ingenious people presented adaptations for all to try. One was a free software program designed to prevent the cursor from taking its solo jaunts, and another inventor described opening the machine and placing additional aluminum shielding between the screen and the rest of the computer. These adaptations where found to work by all who tried them (and reported back). along the way such topics were discussed as 'floating voltage', the effect of temperature on the phenomenon, whether a grounded (non-NEC) power adapter was used vs the NEC 2 pronged higher voltage version.

Most recently, the phenomenon had appeared among the IBM/lenovo crew. The most impressive response on that thread was to use a program that could adjust the voltage, speed, and multipliers on the lenovo tablet. Unfortunately, the program does not appear to work on the NEC.

Anybody able to make sense of what I'm talking about and have any ideas to contribute? thank you, Mike Moore

Thanks, Steve. I've actually done both of those so far. Unfortunately, the drivers still Fail on the install and the scrollbars are still on the right.

Perry,

You can try 2 things and see if this works for you. Head to Control Panel->System->Hardware Tab->Device manager and check to see if there are any yellow ! 's. If there are you can try reinstall the driver either from windows update or with the driver you have. If this doesn't work sometimes uninstalling the driver, rebooting will allow you to install the driver.

On setting it up for left handedness. You can do this in control panel, Tablet and Pen settings. Here you can choose either to use the pen as a left handed or right-handed person as well as set up how the menus pop up.

Hope this helps.

just got my very firsttablet pc - finally! a used TC 1000 it except for two things: First, the hardware buttons aren't working and the driver fails to install. I'm not sure why but I think it may be that the driver wasn't set up for XP SP2 and HP doesn't have a newer one on their website. The second problem is my own fault. I'm left handed and I want a way to movethe scroll bars to the left side of windows so I don't have to reach across what I'm reading to scroll. If anyone has a solution to either problem, I'd sure appreciate hearing about it!

I laughed when I read:
"The first thing I did some might find a bit strange– I made a mind map in MindManager that listed all the software and drivers I needed"

I must also be a bit strange as just finished a Mindmap of all my applications ready for a pc rebuild!

It's a great reference. I populated the map using Belarc Advisor which scans for applications and drivers etc and creates a html report. Copy pasted the bits I wanted to the map adding hyperlinks, codes and status markers as required.

I acutally do something what Scotty suggests by running a Virtual Machine on my Tablet (good thing it has an 80GB HD and 2GB of RAM. I have an imaged Virtual PC of the Tablet OS I use for testing on my Tablet and recommend using it if it is available to you. Some people I know just run their every day apps right from a Virtual machine and can get back into business with out any fear of data corruption. VMWare 5 is probably even better since it will also read Virtual PC images. :)

I would suggest to you that if you want to keep your Tablet PC running quickly you might want to invest in a copy of VMWare 5.

With VMWare 5 you can build up a virtual test lab. Before you test a new piece of software you can "clone" that test lab and then install the software into the clone. If the software doesn't pass muster you can simply erase the clone test lab and the software is truly gone as if it never existed.

Well that didn't take long... :)

Glad to see it went smoothly. I wrote about my adventures in "reinstall land" here on my Tablet PC Blog entitled "Getting Back in Business from Tablet PC Failure" for those that are having problems with their Tablets:

<a href="http://www.tabletpcblogs.com/blogs/fyiguy/archive/2005/08.aspx" rel="nofollow">http://www.tabletpcblogs.com/blogs/fyiguy/archive/2005/08.aspx</a>

I actually created a "must have app DVD" that I can carry with me in case I have to do this on the road. Also comes in handy when you do your scheduled wipe and reinstall of your laptop/tablet pc.
