Of Goldilocks, three bears, and three mobile devices
Goldilocks left the kitchen, stomach nicely full from the big bowl of Honey Nuts N Oats cereal she’d just eaten. Heading into the back of the Bears’ home she walked into the study and her eyes got so wide! "Look at this, there are 3 computers in here! I can check my email and IM my friends!"
She is drawn naturally to the littlest computer, the Vulcan FlipStart. "Oh my, look how cute this is. It’s a tiny little laptop, I can’t wait to use this. She picks up the little FlipStart and promptly drops it onto her foot. "Ouch, ouch, ouch!" she exclaims. While the FlipStart is one of the tiniest laptops you’ll ever see she made the mistake that most who handle the FlipStart for the first time make, she misjudged how awfully heavy it is. It’s made by the man who helped start Microsoft and who now owns most of Seattle. He must have a lot of important information to carry around with him to lug this heavy little PC everywhere.
Goldilocks limps back to the desk and puts the FlipStart back where she found it, being careful to use two hands and all her strength to keep from dropping it again. After all she only has one good foot left and she may have to dash out at any moment if the 3 bears return unexpectedly. Having placed it back on the desk her eyes are drawn to the giant, pretty laptop at the other end of the desk, the Apple MacBook Pro.
"My, look how big this is! That must be at least a 17 inch screen! But it’s so thin at the same time!" She sits down and opens up the web browser and jumps onto the web, checks her email, sends some IM messages to a few friends, and listens to music through the MacBook which sounds so nice. She finds it very easy to use, even though she’s never used one before. It’s made by the House that Jobs Built.
She decides to carry the MacBook over by the window and quickly realizes how heavy it is. "I’m not going to make the same mistake twice and drop THIS one on my foot." In spite of the weight she discovers it is very easy to carry so she brings it with her and sits in the nice, big overstuffed chair by the window. She sets the giant MacBook Pro in her lap and starts writing an email to Muffy, her very best friend in the whole, wide world. After thinking a bit about what she wants to tell Muffy she types in the first two sentences when she realizes her legs feel like they are on fire. "Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, my legs are burning up"! That’s when she notices the fire is coming from the bottom of the giant computer in her lap. "I can’t use this, it’s going to burn me right up!" So she takes the giant MacBook Pro back where she found it, after rummaging through the closet and finding some nice gloves to prevent burning her hands.
There is only one computer left on the desk so Goldilocks picks it up and says "now this is more like it! It’s so light and small and yet so functional with the Core Solo processor, integrated keyboard and touch screen!" She takes the Fujitsu P1610 to the chair by the window and sits down, the computer comfortable in her hands without being too heavy. She does her email, IM and checks the Britney Spears web site for any new information about her absolute favoritist celebrity, and to her delight she discovers she still has almost 5 hours of battery life left! "This is the bestest mobile computer I have ever used, I think I’ll take this one with me!"
And so she does, a fact that is going to tick off Momma Bear no end when the 3 bears return home from robbing bee hives. The moral of the story is- never leave your P1610 lying around unprotected, you never know when Goldilocks might show up, and always choose the right tool for the job at hand.

James, you are nuts!!! :-) In the best possible way. I got such a laugh out of that posting. Imagine how impressed Goldilocks will be when she sees an SSD in that P1610!
Too funny.
On a separate note, you mentioned in your first video about the P1610 that you use your bluetooth stowaway keyboard. My question is this… do you find yourself still using it a lot? I was thinking about that when I read Rob Bushway’s comments a few days ago about the cramped feeling he has with the P1610. Just curious.
Stephen, thanks for appreciating my warped sense of humor. :) Re: the Stowaway- I do not carry it any longer, I am able to use the P1610 keyboard just fine, and I have large hands.
James,
if you had to choose… oqo 02 or Flipstart????
When are we going to see some video reviews? I want to see you blog about it using the Macbook Pro as a video work station.
Thanks
Josh
P.S. The right tool for the job is the one that does it’s intended job the best for the owner.
James,
if given a choice, would you choose the p1610 over an UX390n? If so, for which reasons?
Hi James, I’m a longtime, silent reader and you finally got me to pipe up with this one. In fact, I’m “piping up” on my own lovely (just right) p1610. As soon as I saw the array I was getting ready to wax defensive if Goldilocks didn’t pick the right one. Very funny piece and I particularly appreciate the burning Apple. Jamie
For all those wondering if I would choose the FlipStart or the OQO Model 02- I haven’t used the OQO yet so I can’t really choose at this time.
Wow! That Goldilocks is some kid!….
But seems to have a good head on her shoulders….
:-)
Ahhh! That’s a picture that warms my heart! It has been a while since I have taken a picture of my ‘rigs’. However, mine is also a mix of XP, Vista, and MAC OS (I also have Ubuntu).
This is a fairly recent picture of my toys… Since then I have ‘upgraded’ the U50 to an OQO (note the word upgraded in quotation marks! Ha ha!), my main machine is no longer a 12″ Powerbook (although I still have that), I now use a _white_ Macbook! Very nice! But I still have my 23″ intel iMac and the Quicksilver G4 with Cinema Display! PS. you’ll also see my Palm OS Fossil Watch plugged in! My primary PDA is still a Treo 650 (even though I have an iMate Jasjar…. The Windows Mobile 5 devices are just too slow and clunky for me at this point).
Here’s a link to a picture of some of my toys:

No RH included in the story. I’m still wondering “the story” on it?
