Nokia Ovi App Returns You to Your Car Thanks to Skyhook Wireless
Wasn’t it Skynet that everyone feared in the “The Terminator” films? Maybe folks are afraid of the wrong company because Skyhook continues to dominate location services using Wi-Fi. Or more specifically, Skyhook Wireless does. And today it announced partnerships today with a pair of Nokia Ovi applications.
“I Parked Here” uses Wi-Fi on your Nokia S60 handset to help remember exactly where you left your parked car. The software might even save you a few dollars — it offers a parking meter alarm feature that alerts you when it’s time to feed the machine. That’s a far cheaper option than a parking ticket, as I learned during my last trip to New York City. “Near Here” is the second Ovi title. The app is a local search tool for finding nearby points of interest in more than 500 categories and subcategories. Personally, the first app sounds more appealing to me than the second. There are plenty of free local search web services. My ol’ fave is Earthcomber.
Both apps are available starting today in the Nokia Ovi Store and are priced at $2.99 each. Since neither title relies on true GPS signals, you don’t need that option in your handset. Just a Wi-Fi radio combined with the massive Skyhook Wireless location database and you’re good to go. Or come back, if you need to return to your vehicle.
