You’re right, poor choice of words. I was thinking more along the lines of colors you would see in a garden, thus garden variety. Good catch.

Hmm. The term “garden variety” usually refers to something ordinary and unremarkable (i.e. something no more noteworthy than the vegetables in your garden). Though they’re not spectacular, I don’t think I’d call these colors garden variety. I think they’re very eye-catching.
