It doesn't seem like Google Desktop Search searches any tablet files, like Journal and OneNote files. I couldn't find any plugins for that.

You should install Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 on your Tablet PC. That way you can run your Tablet PC software on that and use the "undo disk" to have the "Virtual Tablet PC" in tip-top-shape! Your "real" tablet pc won't have all of the extra stuff from the installs/removals.

Fuuny you should mention that MSN Desktop Search slowed your computer down, same here, tried it twice, removed it twice. But unlike you I found GDS almost as bad and it's history now as well and whilst I was at it I took as much else as possible off and now the computer runs brilliantly and no trouble from Outlook, which was always hampered by a search program.

Moral of the story: don't be tempted, stick with the basics

The point of my exercise here was not to rebuild the Tablet. I do that often enough but this time I was only interested in removing individual programs that I do not (or rarely) use.

I intended to write a mini-review of Google DS but no time. Two things caused me to switch: GDS is much faster and has less impact on my Tablet and it doesn't interfere with system shutdown. MSN Search always kept my system from rebooting as it had to be manually killed before a reboot would happen.

        James,
Can you tell us what you found compelling enough about Google desktop search over Micrsoft desktop search that caused you to switch?

I've done that and it works for the most part. The only problem is that installing all your apps is an incremental process.

Lets say for example you imaged a clean install and a "post-app install" that had Visual Studio .NET 2003 installed on it. Then you come to a point where you want to get clean again. But now you have VS 2005 installed. Do you restore your plain XP image and then spend days reinstalling apps? Do do you restore your "post-app image" then uninstall VS 2003 and reinstall VS 2005 which suddenly feels less clean.

Not to mention all the apps you've installed in between the time you imaged... it's alot to remember.

I used to reinstall alot but now that I use so many different apps and development tools, I try to do it alot less.

Why not make an image with Ghost after performing a clean install? Especially when you keep your documents and settings on another partition this works great!
