Good look at types of user. Of course there a many many more and not many of use would slot easily into a given category but the list has certainly made me think about user types.
Interestingly you haven’t really slotted UMPCs into any user type. What type of user is a UMPC user?

I would add artist type users. A very typical one would be photographers who need to use powerful software to do their job in a very small handheld device. I would say Sony U-70, Raon Everun or OQO are perfect for these type of people should the devices be powerful enough. And oh yes, Apple. These type of people are usually mac lovers.

I think I definitely fit in the Information Creator category, because I spend the majority of my day keeping up with headlines and information consumption but I also need to create support documents and edit other documents that my users are having trouble with.

I’m very satisfied with convertible Tablet PC’s, in varying form factors, but I am also functional (albeit slower) on my Sprint Mogul phone, and I feel tied down when using a full desktop (though I do, of course, for serious web design).

… now that I’m thinking about it, that’s actually just a (P) Information Creator with the compatibility thing going in the opposite direction. Hmm… maybe I was too quick to dismiss your comment about starting places?

I would add another category of office worker – the Information Annotator or Information Editor. They need not only to review but also to comment on an Information Creator’s documents. They also need to annotate documents for their own use and to take notes. They may need to fill out forms or interact with corporate applications. I would put them between the Information Consumer an the Information Creator. They need more input capability than a MID but less than a convertible Tablet. Their ideal is a UMPC or small slate that can handle pen input well. The OQO, Fujitsu p1610, and Motion LS 800 (or C5) would fit.
