Mid-life is influencing my mobile tech purchases
I’ve been mostly offline today due to my migration from Outlook 2003 to 2007; more on that later. While I had downtime in between .OST and .PST file movement, I realized I’m not getting any younger. Dare I say it: am I reaching that mid-life point and can expect the standard crisis? I think so because my mobile tech needs have changed. I used to crave run-time over performance, but the pendulum has swung back. I need power and speed in my mobile technology. Run-time can be extended but performance? Well, you typically need to buy that right from the beginning. Sure, you can tune up and tweak, but how far will it get you?
Yup, my needs are definitely changing and it’s evident by the latest potential acquisition. What is that I’m considering? It’s not what you think…in fact, I’d give every reader three guesses and I still think nobody would figure it out…
Had you going didn’t I? :) For the record, we haven’t bought this 1991 Corvette yet, but my dad needs to sell it and we could use a backup car so we’re leaning heavily in favor of it. We just need something for when the kids go in different directions with their activities; the hybrid vehicle is first and foremost our main car due to the fuel savings. If we do purchase this, please don’t ask me to mount a UMPC on the dash…not gonna happen!

Actually Stephen, I lose money every month right now. I’m funding the difference with savings that I hit each month to make up the shortfall. If I buy the car, I’d be buying it at significant discount from its value since I’m buying it from my father.
At first I was going to say “take the plunge” as I drove one for over 10 years and loved it, and still miss it.
But reading your comment about finances I will tell you to think carefully – when they break they are not cheap. Even a new tire is (or was) almost $300 (and that was 8 years ago.) And once an older one goes down it almost becomes a regular thing. My mechanic was eventually giving me a “good customer” discount. :(
I doubt your Dad would sell you a ‘problem’ but there’s no way to foresee the future. Be careful.

I agree with Trevor, I was given a slightly used 79 Vette as a bonus and I LOVED it. I’ve driven a lot of powerful cars since then including the Ferrari my employer bought when he gave me the Vette but there is nothing like the Vette. The run rate is what you have to look out for, I needed tires and an exhaust system all at the same time and with my first child on the way ended up trading in the Vette for a “family” car. It was a very sad experience to watch it go into the dealers lot.
Just don’t clog it up by installing Vista!
Come on! You have to mount some kind of computer in it. Maybe, the HTC Advantage???
No worries Mike. GM recommends Mobile 1, not Vista.
You’ll need a pretty fast computer in that thing to calculate real-time fuel consumption. :)
Actually, the 1991 offers a real-time digital readout of current and average fuel consumption. Trust me: compared to the hybrid, it’s not pretty. ;)
