Lights Out: more granular power management for Macs
I know Michael Gartenberg was looking for an easier way to better manage power settings on his Mac and Lights Out might be the answer. This $8.99 application offers far more power management settings than the standard Energy Saver applet in OS X. With it you can specify the number of minutes or hours before these functions and more:
- Screen dimming
- Disk sleeping
- CPU sleeping
- Logout
- Shutdown
- Customized Energy Saver settings at the individual application level
Come to think of it, this looks like a small subset of Vista’s power management settings! Did I just say that out loud? *ducks* Will you folks stop throwing things at me if I tell you there’s a free trial of Lights Out available? Go ahead and download it… it’s on me.

If my Mom saw a screen like that she wouldn’t be able to make heads or tails of it. Yet she can handle the one supplied by Apple.
I think you’ve hit on one of the key differences between Vista and Leopard: with Vista you have to be an expert. With OS X you can add complexity if you feel you need it.
