I am considering something “like” this for my boat/car/etc.
My specs are:
display: touch screen daylight visible
storage: ssd, 2gb ram
cpu: power to run skype, 720p perhaps
optional: compass, accelerometer
form: tablet/slate preferrable, could be hybrid
os: preferrably linux, xp/w7 ok
I am wondering whether I can use an off the shelf device or perhaps if I should build a “car pc” and remote some kind of touch display.
You’ve had the Q1/Viliv/etc. in your hands much…what would you do?
I would suggest without a doubt that you go out and purchase a Viliv X70 3G Premium. It has everything your looking for. Either that or just wait a few months until Oct. 22nd, 2009 for the “Windows 7″(Win7) release for a better OS option than the dated WinXP SP3.
I’m hoping Viliv will place a new model of the X70 on the market in the same form factor with updated hardware certifying it as a Win7 device.
My vision is this:
I’m talking a better touch screen (OLED with a “Piezo” electronic surface) giving us indoor and outdoor viewing goodness and the feeling of a real keyboard, 2GB RAM, 64GB SSD minimum, a 1.6GHz Atom, HDMI out instead of the proprietary video ports, changing the jog stick to have the function of a real mouse pointer in its present position, a VGA webcam in place of the present 1.3 mega pixel webcam but having a slightly angled lens that centers the face when held with both hands, on the back directly in the middle a 5 mega pixel camera, and last changing the case to aluminum construction like the “Nokia Booklet 3G” giving us what I hope would be a slightly thinner version to the existing X70 and more upscale looks.
I’m thinking all this is very possible today as you have nearly all these features in cell phones minus the Atom processor of course.
I really hope the engineers at “Viliv” are reading this posting. Cause that would produce the device no one could resist purchacing accross the entire industry.
JK – Did you end up buying the Viliv X70 to go along with your S5?
No, this is the loaner from Viliv. I can’t afford another gadget, believe me. This one goes back soon, too. :(
ha ha…I hear that!
Sell the dog, then you might have more cash for gadgets. :)
Just kidding. Really.
James, have you tried using the BlackBerry Storm as an ebook reader? What do you think of it?
if the dog was an aibo it would be perfect

I have been hearing mixed messages regarding OLED (or is it AMOLED) in direct daylight.
Is this Payment in Kind by J. A. Jance ? :P
Yes it is, ninth book in the J. P. Beaumont series. :)
