Last (hopefully) update on Vista sleep problem
My Vista sleep problems have touched a lot of people, some who are interested and some who don’t like my talking about problems with Vista. The Vista fix was applied a couple of days ago and I should tell you how my HP 2710p has fared since then. In a word, error-free. The Vista discovered hotfix so far has done the trick and I have experienced no sleep issues nor any Sleep of Death issues since the hotfix was applied. That makes me pretty happy I can assure you. I have heard from a few people who felt I was bashing Vista unfairly which I don’t agree with as I simply reported what was happening to me. I do agree with those who said I should praise Vista’s error discovery process and solution determination which worked well in this case. But, and that’s a big word, the bottom line is my Vista machine was working flawlessly for months, developed a heinous problem affecting my work, and a Microsoft hotfix was needed to patch the OS to correct for this new problem. The hotfix was dated December 10th which was just a couple of weeks before the first appearance of this problem on my system which strikes me as curious. I do feel that such an important update should have been pushed via Windows Update as I’m pretty sure it affects most mobile PCs running Vista. In any event it’s great that my HP is back to working as it did for months, I hope this continues in the future.

I installed the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943899 fix and didn’t see any improvement in the undocking problems I’ve been seeing. After undocking, Process Explorer told me that services.exe was using about 90% CPU, and after restarting the LS800 hung with the computer on light lit but the hard drive light off. Such hangs occur about a third of the time on the first time restarting after undocking, but this is the first time I’ve noticed the issue with services.exe occurring beforehand.
There seem to be several problems relating to restarting Vista computers. It is good to see that one is apparently solved, but other problems remain.
If anyone has ideas how to work up this problem such that it gets solved I’d be interested.
Absolutely keep on talking about it. WITHOUT exception it is unacceptable that such a fundamentally basic error (with potentially huge ramifications in data loss, commercial productivity) still exists. Migrating soon to Vista myself with the recent purchase of a Lenovo x61 tablet, I’m trying to learn as much as possible from your experience and that of others. Microsoft needs to hear the roar of giants to effect change!
I agree- just because the operating system discovered the problem, prompted the fix, and solved your issue- you need to keep talking about it. Make sure everyone hears about this Vista success story! We need some positive press for this underdog system and this type of incident needs to be played up. No need to box up the macbook for a return, or a run to the glass and aluminum genuis bar to talk to someone who knows less than you.. Nope- Vista gets it done.
I am interesting if you have applied Vista Service Pack 1 RC to that machine and if this patch is part of it. I have a TablatPC Asus R1F and I have to say, after I have applied SP1 all my bad experiences with Vista are gone.
The fact that Vista prompted you with the fix is actually a very cool feature, that over time, should only get better. Let’s give ‘em credit for this one!
James,
By all means keep talking about Vista, good or bad. I applied the same update you did and it seems to have solved the sleep issues I was having with Vista on my Motion M1400.
Keeping my fingers crossed.
Romanca, I have not installed SP1 beta on any of my devices.
James,
Thank you for reporting this. I was attending a conference yesterday and I put my R400 in sleep mode while others were presenting. When it was my turn, I couldn’t help but notice that the R400 came back from sleep mode in my bag and I had to bring out the power cable and look like a goof while I was plugging it before I gave my speech.
I guess I will try this hotfix myself…
