Yes, I’ve been hard at work trying to get Vista RC2 fully functional on the Q1 UMPC. Vista on its own is quite stable; it’s the little Samsung and touchscreen nuances that took some effort. So how does it work? What’s the performance like? Obviously, I can’t show every Vista feature in a short video (or even a large one apparently), so here’s a walkthrough of some features:
- Vista startup with sound and touchscreen (with some workarounds)
- Quick overview of the system tray icons
- Screen calibration
- Native TIP and the floating tip
- Vista search and Start
- New York Times Reader
- Windows Journal
- Windows Media Center for audio, games and video
- Windows Mobile Device Center and PDANet; didn’t work this time…that’s the nature of doing a video I guess! ;)
- Speech Recognition demo
- Standby and Resume time
- Oops! I almost forgot the Screen Rotation and Screen Resolution switcher!

Well, I was glad to see Vista running on a UMPC as well as that; with the slower processor I was expecting a much more sluggish response than shown. Good work, Kevin!
I can’t see myself paying to upgrade my Q1 to Vista, but I’m impressed with what I’ve seen of the OS so far.

I installed RC2 on a separate partition on my Q1 shortly after you did and all your research has been very helpful. The main problem I’m having (which is the reason why I switched back to XP from RC1) is the display manager crashes. How did you get the resolution switcher and the menu to work?
Great video! I don’t plan to be experimenting on “Dude” anytime soon but I love being able to see what Vista looks like running on a Q1. Great work! Please keep us posted if you get any update on the USB stick TV tuner. I’m very interested in catching a little digital TV on my Q1.
Thanks for the positive comments; it makes the effort worth the while. Rodney, ever since I got the latest, greatest Intel graphics driver installed, Display Manager has been running fine. I lost the onscreen display functionality but reinstalled the driver to get it back; I also turned off automatic updating in Windows Update and now I appear to have no issues. Bill: I had an ATSC USB tuner in my hand yesterday at Best Buy but at the last second put it down. I have some feelers out for a review unit and I want to wait for those queries to come back before another out of pocket expense. It didn’t help that I had 2 copies of Tiger Woods 07 for the Xbox 360 in my hand at the time. ;)
Sweet. I installed the latest Intel Graphics (Version 6.14.10.4704) and the menu now works. I can now rotate the screen, increase/decrease the brightness, etc..
But.. the resolution switcher still isn’t working. I went to the display manager and it appears that the only resolutions available are 640×480 & 800×480. I reinstalled the Display Manager and get the same results. Any tips to point me in the right direction?
where is 6.14.10.4704 driver? I see only 4545 on Samsung’s drivers. I can change brightness and resolution on Vista RC2. after installed Samsung’s software UI and displays manager (from previous XP versions)
