jkOnTheRun First Look: Viliv N5 UMPC
Korean gadget maker Viliv is getting the N5 ready for release, and I have a pre-production unit in my hot little hands. I’ll be giving the Viliv N5 a deep dive over the next few days, but have some photos of this little Windows 7 PC for your enjoyment. Seriously win 7 starter? And only 1.3 atom which is a terrible chip on my Sony p.
damn that Evo is pretty! really makes the DroidX look like a typical over-designed Motorola crapola.
Does your version really have wimax?
Specs alone make the Fujitsu UH900 beat this unit easily. I thought you didn’t like little keyboards James? Care to take the UH900 for a spin?
The N5 reminds me of my S5. The design in some way it is the same, except now with keyboard. I think I will hold onto my S5 for a little bit longer. When I need to be really portable and need full OS; with Tablet Edition I take my S5 with me. I got a second battery so I really always manage to get all day with no problem just with one battery.
James you still have your Viliv S5?
The S5 has been gone a while.
Although it does look like the S5 is being phased out, it’s still readily available. I just bought my S5 a couple of weeks ago from Amazon. Dynamism also still sells the S5.
I was really on the fence about taking the plunge, because I knew the N5 was coming out. But I’m glad I did, because the S5 suits me far better. The S5 and N5 have the same processor, amount of RAM, and battery life (though the S5 has 200 hours standby, while the N5 only 150 hours) so I’m not sacrificing performance by choosing last year’s model. The N5 has the camera and built-in mic, but I don’t want the former (a lot of places ban cameras, including many IT departments and that’s an issue for me) and I compensate for the lack on the S5 by using a headset with mic.
I will admit that I would love is the microSD support, but I work around that with a USB key. That said, I have the S5 with a 60GB hard drive, so space isn’t as much of an issue as it would be the N5 with 32GB SSD.
I think it just boils down to whether a person prefers to have a built-in keyboard. I personally find those tiny keyboards too cramped for anything other than an URL or password, so my preference is for the tablet form of the S5. I also happen to prefer XP, which is amazingly responsive and stable on the S5.
For your work, does this device offer any advantages over an iPad?
Hoping to see the full review soon. There’s been mixed feelings about this particular device. JK please give some feedback about the rumored weight re-distribution problem (where the screen tilts the device at a certain angle) and if the screen is really that glossy.
I don’t think glossy screens really bother him that much, and they normally don’t bother me either, but damn looking at the 12th picture I can seriously see the screen affecting my work flow… And that would be in a bad way, not a good one.
I’m also looking forward to the full review, and I have a request. Could you comment on the pocketability of the device, I know you don’t have a problem with the Evo in your pocket, but this device is significantly thicker and larger.
Thanks…
Pocketables.net has a great review out now with tons of technical details.
