In James’ defense, not that he really needs it, where’s all of your data? He’s gone on and on and on about syncing issues, living out of Exchange, and so on, and it all points out that his data is both everywhere *and* all in one place at the same time.

If your device is irrelevant, then you have the luxury of picking the right one for the job. Need performance and mobility at the office? Use a big tablet. Need convenience at home? P1610. Need a powerful system, at the expense of JK’s preferred level of portability? MacBook Pro. Need mobile email and telephony? Blackberry. Need portability above and beyond all other features, while retaining a decent app base? Advantage. If everything’s synced up, it hardly matters that he’s bouncing between options, does it?

Now, for those of us who *can’t* afford three computers, a WinMo device, a cell phone, an EVDO card, and the associated three cellular accounts, hosted Exchange, and various accessories, sure, we all pick the best compromise, and to be honest, you could probably buy a car for the combined retail price of all of the gear that he’s using.

Personally, under his general use profile, I’d probably just load up a P1610 with gobs of RAM, hack in an SSD, and use that as my everyday system.

Don’t you think that its a little overkill? To have so many gadgets? To solve the solution of having a PDA/Phone, with your 8800, and your Advantage, what about the new HTC TyTN II. That phone does everything that both the Advantage and Blackberry can do. Now with Google IMAP Support, syncing email shouldn’t be to hard. I know that when I use my TyTN, syncing contacts, email, my appointments, and tasks, is a snap in outlook. Not only that but the ability to view OneNote in WM6, is a HUGE Plus! Maybe find a happy medium with your mobile PC Devices using your P1610, or grab a Q1P with organizer pack. To me, having so many mobile devices like that, even though you can justify their use, I think is overkill. Then again I’m not a mobile professional, rather just a college student.

Simply put, the BB works. Even with the various J2ME apps available for it, it’s not the smartest phone on the block, nor is it the most brilliantly designed phone around, but it is by far the best mobile email/cellphone combination device on the market.

If you want to do everything else, don’t get one, but if email comes first, the damned thing just slurps it down, belches it back out, and excels at letting you read/reply immediately.

Additionally, there are third party services that do what a WinMo device can’t: Deliver email when your Exchange server has blown up. I’m not kidding.

dbrotzen, the HTC Advantage is not a normal cell phone. It can only be used as a phone with either a headset or as a speakerphone so I don’t recommend using one as your only phone. That aside it’s a great mobile communicator which is how I use it. The phone function is why I would never consider replacing my BB with it.

Stephen Hill, I scan all handouts / documents that I deem important. I scan them straight into OneNote as images so I can ink notes on them. Note that OneNote makes these scanned docs searchable which is why I do it this way.

I love idea of using a tablet in my many meetings, however, I do have a question. In my meetings I am often on the receiving end of documents/handouts that cannot be electronically submitted to me. I’ve thought about scanning them in and then inserting them into OneNote… Any other ideas?

I always return to your blog. It’s a great read. “The right tool for the job, that’s my motto.” I’d like to carry as few pieces of gear as possible to keep weight down. I’m curious what is it that the BB has the Advantage doesn’t? If you could pick only one of them, which one would you pick?

Only I thought it was 4.30 SUPER PM – I didn’t think anyone treated it as a morning time… Like something that gets stacked on to the end of the night – not the beginning of the morning.

It’s nearly 3am here in Sydney right now *beams* but thats the way my body works.
