“Keeping with the good ‘ol high school memories: I set a school record in the 800m track event my junior year. The record stood for about 15 years when some faster whippersnapper doubled around the track in just under two minutes. Nice job, BTW!”

I ran the 880 (as in yards) when I was in high school, too (yeah, I know that “yards” bit dates me). I ran the event by default — nobody else wanted to run it, and everyone else was faster than me at the shorter distances.

We competed against another school who just so happened to have the reigning state champion in that event. This guy was literally world class. I remember one meet very well because I ran my fastest time ever and he ran one of his slowest. I ran 880 yards in 2:05, and he ran it in 1:58. His “good” times were “normally” sub-1:50, so he must have been having a bad day (we all have’em, no?). Or, maybe he just felt sorry for me. I know he brought my game up. I never ran that fast ever again.
