It’s 1pm. Did you hug a FiOS contractor yet today?
I did and I’m man enough to admit it. What are the odds that on the day Verizon announces new FiOS plans with increased speeds, a contractor is marking off where the fiber will be run in our development? According to my new friend (who probably thinks I’m a nut-case), fiber will be buried here in a week or two. About six weeks after that, the service should be offered. Currently we have a Verizon land-line, which I intend to ditch due to our cell phones and DSL service good for 3 MBps down and 768 kbps up.
With the upgraded and new FiOS plans from Verizon, we may have a choice from the following (all speeds in Mbps):
- 50 down / 20 up
- 20 down / 20 up
- 20 down / 5 up
- 10 down / 2 up
I’m leaning towards the symetrical 20/20 service which should run me $64.95 a month with a contract. That’s double what I currently pay for DSL, but the removal of the land-line will save us $60 a month, so we still come out ahead. We tried to get a pic of the "FiOS appreciation hug", but the best we could do was get a shot of where the fiber is getting buried in my front yard. Go figure…

Holy crap thats fast!
Im stuck in the middle of nowhere clinging to my 3UK mobile broadband (averages around 3.6mbps!) I cant even get 56k modem working on my landline. You guys are so lucky! Does that mean youll be able to stream Full HD Content!!
FiOS is getting closer and closer to my area, Lehigh Valley, PA. It will depend on pricing on if I switch or not. I’m currently using our local cable’s (RCN) 20m service. It speed tests around 18-19m down and 2ish up. Which has been serving my needs just fine. I get phone, tv and internet from them, so I will have to see what the whole package from Verizon would be, and probably go with the cheaper of the 2.
I could get FiOS internet now, but not TV. I get one bill from Comcast right now, and I don’t want to add another bill. We’ll see who gets both first, OK?
;)
Woadan
Dude, there is no way you get FiOS in your back water village before I get it in a major metro area! I’m filing a complaint with someone. CZ?
Damn it! I chased down a Verizon truck in my neighborhood only to be told the trucks had driven down the wrong street and were supposed to be installing in the next neighborhood over. Grrr! I want 20/20!
I’m happy with my 90MBps thank you but according to my neighbour, if you hug 7 different people a day you will live longer.
@John…
90MBps?! That’s crazy fast.
I think I have some kind of internet bandwidth envy thing happening.
If I am not mistaken, FiOS was being made local several months ago. Didn’t know what FiOS was back then though. O.o
That’s great Kev, but I have to tell you, it took like 9 months from the first time I saw them laying fiber until it was actually available. Hopefully mine is the exception and you’ll get it sooner.
I have the 20/5 connection and love it, I’ve exceeded the limits on a few occasions.
As for the HD selection, it really sucks right (21 channels) now, but Verizon has made lots of promises.
Ben, the contractor wouldn’t lie to me after I hugged him, would he? Actually you’re probably right: he told me what I wanted to hear just to get away from me. ;)
I’ll likely stick with Dish for my television content as I’m happy with the equipment and their HD selection. It’s getting to the point where 95% of my viewing is HD-only, so I can’t go back to fewer channels.
Lol, try Virgin Media’s HD channel content here in the UK. One channel. One! I guess at least their PAL standard def is decent.
We should be getting 50 Mbps later this year but seeing as we’re on 20/768kbps at the moment I don’t think we’ll be jumping to 20 Mbps up
!
Kevin, great news. Please note, while you’re allowed to hug FiOS installers, please do not feed them as they are on a… wait for it… high fiber diet. Ben will giving us props for all the HD we carry by Jan. Plus, FiOS HD is as pure as OTA, I’m sure he’d admit.
