Gavin: I'm running Vista on a 1GB P1610 and I recommend it with caution. It works reasonably well overall and I prefer the Vista tablet interface to XP Tablet. In fact, the tablet interface is my primary reason for not removing Vista. XP is more responsive on the Core Solo processor and consumes far less HDD space (Vista requires 15-16GB including hidden system files, recovery partition, etc., although some users streamline it to 3-4GB using vLite). A 2GB microDIMM card would be worthwhile, but it's $450. You can find more information at leog.net.

How well are you finding the 1610 runs with Vista?

I've just picked up a refurb and ordered a 1Gb microdimm. XP is running well, even on the stock 512mb but I personally prefer Vista.

Appreciate any feedback before I pony up for another copy of Vista!

I use the Stowaway Bluetooth keyboard which works well with the P1610/20. I had a similar problem on the P1610 where it seems the shock sensor was set too sensitive. I eventually stopped running it on the P1610 and the problems went away.

Hi

I have the P1610 (which I really love)and I have the same typing issues as you. I was thinking of getting a portable keyboard instead of buying a whole new device. Any thoughts?

Also I was wondering if you could help me with a problem that I am having with the 1610. While I'm inking from time to time the thing locks up on me for 10secs or so. This is very frustrating but I have learned to live with it. I presume it has something to do the the hard drive shock sensor utility or something. I have messed with the utility but no luck. It is also running Vista with 1GB of ram. Maybe a problem?

Thanks for your blog I really enjoy reading and wathcing it

With the devices I've got, the HTC Advantage is kind of redundant but I like it too much, plus it's my portable Sat Nav and in that respect it excels with that big screen!

Depending on what I'm doing I may have my HTC Advantage as well/instead of. All synced using a 16Gb SDHC for my work documents.

I don't know that HP will move to Atom on the Mini as I'm not sure what they'd gain. I believe the Atom is no better than the Via for performance although it would bring better battery life. HP would also have to change from the Via graphics chipset to the integrated Intel too which might be too big a change.

Different tools for different jobs is my opinion. My dual screen desktop at home has convinced me that screen real estate cannot be underrated but my requirements for mobile computing are harder to fill. I definitely think laptops and tablets need to be light weight (especially tablets). I think though that maybe a laptop and a slate together might make the perfect combo. Convertables in my opinion are a great option but just compromise too much when it comes to weight! So I wonder if I couldn't go for a lenovo x series laptop (or Sony tz etc) and then have a pure slate as well. The kicker for me would be if computers linked together better. Can I have a really functional dual screen computer using both together and what happens if I dock either or both to external screens? How do you keep your data in sync between the two? If I'm crunching numbers would one ask the other for some processing time or do I just end up with one really stressed machine while the other sits idle. If computers linked together better, having mutliple computers would be an easier sell and sport benefits for both each machine being better at its specialization while also combining into something more powerful and useful. Sounds a bit like Voltron really :S

So I wonder if I couldn’t go for a lenovo x series laptop (or Sony tz etc) and then have a pure slate as well. The kicker for me would be if computers linked together better. Can I have a really functional dual screen computer using both together and what happens if I dock either or both to external screens? How do you keep your data in sync between the two? If I’m crunching numbers would one ask the other for some processing time or do I just end up with one really stressed machine while the other sits idle. If computers linked together better, having mutliple computers would be an easier sell and sport benefits for both each machine being better at its specialization while also combining into something more powerful and useful.
