James, good to see you are recuperating nicely. I bought my Itouch from Amazon at a discounted price so I didn’t have a problem with spending the $20 to upgrade to the new features. Whether the apps should have been there from the beginning or not is water under the bridge. They weren’t and I still bought it anyways. I like the new features and now jkontherun is only a single touch away on my home screen. Mail is the most useful app for me and I am sure for many others. Notes would rank second. The other apps I won’t use very often, the stock app is just depressing to look at lately anyways. LOL. Hope that you continue to feel better and better.

Oh thank god there is some sanity left in this world!

I’ve been on the fence for some time at to a touch or a N800 but finally settled on the (i)touch (it just works unlike the N800). Apple says if you bought within 30 days from them you get a 20 credit in Itunes and otherwise to ask your merchant for a rebate. I got $40 off it at Amazon so I feel I got it free and then some.. Looking forward to a ton of apps comming in Feb and yes you will probably have to buy those too through itunes.

James, did you have a backup of your music collection on the HP? That was farsighted.

I have to add that I don’t think that $20/£13 for the five apps is excessive. It’s not a lot of money. The Mail app alone is worth at least half of that. (I’d been using the Gmail (mobile) web interface, which is fiddly and awkward by comparison.) I really like Notes, too. There are online web apps, such as mobilewebdocs.com, which do much the same thing, but Notes is still available when you’re out of range of wifi. The Maps app is neat, though I don’t expect to get much opportunity to use it. And, who knows, I might develop an interest in the stock market or, more likely, the weather.

I’ve notice a couple of iPod touches (mine included) which had mysterious and intermittent battery drains. Anyhoo, the main reason why I wanted to post is that there are some alternatives to paying $20 for the 5 iPhone apps. A couple are web apps, namely weatherbug (for weather) and iTouchmap (for google maps) – which should be adequate since using the native apps require web access anyway. The third is iMapIdle (a 3rd party app) for dealing with imap mail, which requires a jailbroken touch. I’m still looking for a notes alternative (I’ve been using ‘contacts’ instead), while I have no stocks to look up anyway, but I’m sure there’s a web app for that as well.

I may consider forking out the ‘early adopter tax’ later on for those 5 apps, but probably not until 1.1.3 has been jailbroken.

The only issue I’ve had with my iPod Touch is the fact that I had owned it for five days and they wanted another $20 out of me. :S

Hope it gets through this. I’ve fallen in love with my iPod Touch as well.
