iPhone hacking teen cashes in
That 17 year-old who hacked the iPhone to free it from the bindings of AT&T has traded his modified iPhone for a hot Nissan 350Z and 3 unmodified iPhones. A cell phone repair company in Kentucky, CertiCell, traded with George Hotz no doubt for promotional purposes to come. Hotz got the 3 iPhones in the deal to give to the 3 online collaborators who helped him hack the iPhone.
The 17-year-old Hotz said he will be sending the three new iPhones tothe three online collaborators who helped him divorce Apple Inc’spopular product from AT&T’s network. The job took 500 hours, orabout 8 hours a day since the iPhone’s June 29 launch.
While we all knew the iPhone would end up unlocked give Apple and AT&T credit that it took 500 hours to do so.

Well done (and well deserved cmpensation) to Mr. Hotz…
Its curious that another couple of unlockign solutions have surfaced (but are not yet available to the public). The folks at iphoneunlocking.com claim to have it but are keeping it in the wraps because of a potential legal dispute with AT&T. The folks at iphonesimfree.com claim to have it (and in fact this has been verified by Engadget), but have also not released it yet.
Myself, I can’t wait to get my iphone unlocked and ditch AT&T. It is terrible for technology and for consumers, to be forced to have a service that clearly is not always the best.
So, I “drink up” to the achievment of Mr. Hotz and wish to see a happy ending to this saga…
Do you guys really think it took him 500 hours to hack the iPhone? Who has 8 hours a day to work on this type of project let alone would like to do so?!
Probably 500 hours total (all three 4 people combined). Most time was probably devoted to research on what was keeping it locked.
